Holly Nicole Shapiro, 17, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters where she courageously fought leukemia for several months. She was born in Newport News on March 13, 1994, and was a lifelong resident of the peninsula. She attended Woodside High School for three years, where she maintained over a 4.0 grade average. Throughout her life, she was on numerous sports teams, including swimming, field hockey, softball, indoor and outdoor track, cross country, and ultimate Frisbee. She was treasurer of the Key Club, participated in Woodside’s drama productions, and was inducted into the National Honor Society.
Her family extends gratitude to the entire staff at CHKD for the incredible care and loving support provided to Holly and her family.
Holly is preceded in rest by her maternal grandparents, James and Lois Montgomery, and paternal grandparents, Arthur and Mary Anne Shapiro. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her mother, Anne Murphy and husband, Brian; father, Michael Shapiro and wife, Jackie; brother, Connor; stepsisters, Olivia Martin and Samantha Murphy; stepbrothers, Vincent Murphy, Jack Martin, and Matt Martin; aunt, Patti Montgomery,and uncle, Ira Shapiro and aunt, Jacque Dedell.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 3, at 11:00 am at Parklawn Funeral Home in Hampton. Family visitation will be on Tuesday, August 2, at
6:00-8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Holly’s life will be commemorated on October 27, 2011 at Peninsula Town Center during the Team HOLLY Light The Night Walk, which is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual fundraiser.
