Willis was born August 20, 1920 in Annapolis, Missouri to Clinton DeWitt Harris and
Stella Jarrett Harris. He was married July 12, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri to Fanchon
Irene Harper who preceded him in death on April 18, 2012. He had been a resident of
Hampton since the family arrived at Fort Monroe in 1953.
He is survived by his children Lois Taylor (John) of Suffolk, VA, Nancy Stacks (Joe) of
Wilmington, NC, John Harris (Ann Marie) of Hampton, VA, and Linda Morrisette
(Roland) of Newport News, VA, grandchildren Jim Taylor (Darlene) of Winchester, VA,
David Taylor of Hampton, VA, Steven Taylor (Jennifer) of Suffolk, VA, Brent Stacks
(Kellee) of Wilmington, NC, Alyssa Harrell (Hugh) of Wilmington, NC, Casey Turchetta
(Butch) of Chesapeake, VA. Great grandchildren are Elizabeth, Jimmy, and Rebecca
Taylor; Tyler, Dylan, and Chelsea Stacks; Natalie, Meredith, and Evan Harrell, Mallory
and Carly Broadwell; and Logan Turchetta.
Willis was the sixth of seven children. His sister Mabel Sheridan (Williamsville, MO) and brothers William Clinton Harris (Piedmont, MO), Lyman Leon Harris (St. Louis, MO), Roger Jarrett Harris (Poplar Bluff, MO), Hugh Loyd Harris (died at 2 years), and James Edward Harris (Pasadena, CA) predeceased him as did his parents.
He grew up in Williamsville, MO. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC); retired from the Army (1942-1967); retired as 7-11 manager (1985). After his retirement he joined the Peninsula Retired Men’s Club and volunteered with the Park Service, Yorktown, VA with a retired CCC group. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and gardening. He was a loving, honest, humorous man.
Willis lived recently at the Devonshire in Hampton and in his last days at Northampton Rehabilitation and Convalescent Center in Hampton where all who cared for him were so kind.
The family will receive friends at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, Wednesday, August 1, 2012 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Following the visitation a service celebrating Herman’s life will be held at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hampton – Veterans Memorial Gardens with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church or to the organization of your choice in memory of Herman W. Harris.
