August 14, 1947 - February 19, 2024
Gerald Lynwood Tyree, Jr, known to his loved ones as Lyn, passed away peacefully at home in Hampton, Virginia after a short illness on February 19, 2024, at the age of 76. He was surrounded by his family and friends. Lyn was born in West Virginia then relocated to Virginia where he spent part of his youth enjoying Buckroe Beach. He was a beloved husband, father, stepfather, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Lyn embraced each day. His warm personality and love for laughter made him a joy to be around, and he cherished spending time with his family and friends. Lyn loved music — no roadtrip or Saturday afternoon was complete without Lyn’s curated Blues tracks. We could hear him signing along, often very loudly. Lyn was the family champion on game night ruling Phase 10 tournaments. Once in a while, Lyn and Betty were even able to take great pleasure in besting in-laws Frances and Butch Jenkins in Sequence games. He was an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed spending Sunday afternoons catching up on games. His height earned him the nickname “Tree” as a young man. Despite his stature, Lyn was easy-going and forgave mistakes quickly.
He is survived by his loving wife Betty, son Chris (Gloria), daughter Shelly Southcomb, stepson Timothy Blume (Sheree), stepdaughters Teresa Blume (Jay Owen) and Melanie Crotts, brother David Tyree, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Lyn is predeceased by his mother Ruth and father Gerald Tyree, Sr. and grandson Joshua Bowman.
Lyn’s legacy of kindness, unconditional love in difficult times and unwavering dedication to loved ones will forever be remembered.
