Frederick R. "Fred" Matthews, Jr., 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 11, 2014. A native of Newport News and resident of Poquoson since 1958, Fred graduated from the NACA Langley Apprentice School in 1953 and retired from the Composite Model Shop at NASA Langley in 1986. He was a member of Wythe Presbyterian Church, Hampton, where for many years he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. Fred was a WWII Army veteran and was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bernice A. Matthews.
He is survived by his son, Matt Matthews (fiancé Susan); three daughters, Kathy Holloman (Howard), Cheryl Howell (Ray), Meg Holloman (Michael); brother, Wayne Matthews (Becky); sister, Cheryl Steeg ( Lee); sister-in-law, Frances Wolf; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren, and many dear friends.
The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and care providers at Riverside Hospital who took such loving care of our father.
The family will receive friends Friday, October 17, from 6 to 8 PM, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, Hampton, and other times at his home at 16 Bayview Drive, Poquoson. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:00 PM, at Wythe Presbyterian Church by Rev. Clint Mitchell.
