She was born on January 13, 1937 to the late Harry Elmo Smith and Lenner O'Geary Smith in Pitt County, NC.
She attended public school in Greenville, NC and graduated from Junius Rose High School. She attended East Carolina College (now East Carolina University) in Greenville, NC.
After graduating from East Carolina with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, she started her lifelong vocation as a third grade teacher in a career spanning 38 years. She taught all of her years in Hampton, VA in two schools, beginning at Francis Mallory Elementary and later returning to and ending at Francis Mallory Elementary. She was a member of the National Education Association, Hampton Education Association, and Virginia Education Association. Florence was also an active member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen S. Briley; and two brothers, Mac Donald Smith and Delbert Columbus Smith.
She is survived by a sister, Barbara S. Dickerson and husband, George of Yorktown, VA; four nieces; three nephews; four great-nieces; two great-nephews; and three great-great nephews.
A burial will be held in Greenville, NC at a later date.
