

Edith Marie Shingles, 71, born in Neptune, NJ, on May 17, 1953, peacefully passed away at home on September 21, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia Bates and Steven Jackson, siblings Shirley Ann, Calvin, John, and Leo Bates. A cherished nurse and devoted mother, Edith leaves behind her children, Michele Wallace-Wilson ((Rubben) of Miami, FL, and John Arthur Shingles, Jr. of Cuthbert, GA. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Tramaine Ramsey Wallace of Dubai, Afrika Imari Pritchett of Hampton, VA, Khalil Robinson of Newport News, VA, Marquise Jaquan Wise of Winston-Salem, NC, and Chyna Marie Williams-Wallace of Atlanta, GA, as well as seven great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by siblings Curtis Wallace of Columbia, April Bates, and Helen Doss of New Jersey, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Edith proudly served in the U.S. Army for a decade as a Supply Sergeant and nurse, stationed at Ft. Sill, Ft. Eustis, Ft. Monmouth, and on a tour in South Korea. After completing her military service, she returned to Newport News, VA, in 1988 to begin her nursing career, holding licenses in VA, NJ, and CT. In 2003, she moved to Hampton, VA, where she dedicated her time to helping disabled veterans through DAV Chapter 6 and volunteered at a local library for underprivileged children. An active member of the American Legion Post 368 and Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple, Edith loved music, dancing, traveling, cooking, playing bingo and spades. Her favorite color was blue, and she had a deep admiration for the Obamas. Edith’s spirit will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
The family will welcome friends on Friday, September 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666. A Celebration of Edith's Life will begin at 12:00 PM, and interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
