He was born on January 29, 1930 in Smithfield, Virginia, son of the late Nicolas O. and Louise M. Gwaltney.
Charles was a loving and devoted family man. He was so proud of his family especially his grandchildren. He was a friend to everyone and was a member of Restoration Phoebus Baptist Church.
He worked for the C&O Railroad for over 30 years and retired as Tugboat Captain; he also retired from VDOT as a Jamestown Scotland Ferry Captain. He was proud to be an Army veteran.
Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine; brother, Nicolas Gwaltney III; sister, Helen Manley; and son, Donald Gwaltney.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 24 years, Myrtle W. Gwaltney; two brothers, William Gwaltney and wife Glenda of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Algie Barrett and wife Marie of Suffolk, Virginia; two sisters, Hilda Ballew of Hampton, Virginia, and Susie Wright and husband Robert of Wichita Falls, Texas; two daughters, Catherine Wendland and husband James of Wasilla, Alaska, and Mary Fortner and husband Michael of Newport News, Virginia; four step children, Ronald Prather, Wanita Kelly, Leo Prather, and Alton Yates; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Novovember 1, 2012. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
