Betty Johnson

Betty Johnson, age 86, of Hampton, Virginia passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022. Betty Ann Johnson was born April 6, 1936 in Huntington, NY to the late James and Lillian Green. Betty Ann and her brothers Lloyd, Edward, Benjamin (all deceased) and sister Gloria Green were all raised in Northport, NY. Betty or Bet, as she was called, attended schools in Northport. She met David Johnson, originally from North Carolina, while he rode by her house on Fort Salonga Road in Northport on his way to work. They would later marry on February 12, 1955. In this union, they had three children. Betty relocated to Amityville, NY then to Massapequa, NY where she worked as Teacher’s Assistant in the Amityville School District for many years. She loved attending church at Bethel A.M.E. in Babylon. In June, 1994, Betty retired and relocated to Hampton, VA that same year, where she became an active member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Hampton. Betty loved to do puzzles. She would hang up her work in her home for all to see. She was very family oriented. Laughing and spending time with her family gave her great joy. Betty departed this life on Friday, December 30, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones. She leaves to cherish her memories; her husband, David Johnson of Hampton, VA; daughters, Deborah Burris of Newport News, VA, Jeanette (Alton) Howard of Smithfield, VA, and Tonia Johnson of Carrollton, VA; grandchildren, William Burris, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Marissa Burris of Newport News, VA, and Angelique Johnson of Yorktown, VA; sister, Gloria Green of Huntington Station, NY; godchildren, Jacqueline Hubbard (deceased) and Arthur (Larry) Foulke, Jr.; the son she never had, William (Pete) Burris, Sr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends. - Lovingly submitted by the family A public viewing for Betty will be held Saturday, January 7, 2023 from 10:15 AM to 11:00 AM at Bethel AME Church, 2521 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666. A celebration of life service will occur Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 11:00 AM. An entombment will take place immediately after at Parklawn Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666.
