Born in Lake Geneva, WI, Al devoted his life to his family and served his country for over 42 years. His service career began in 1949 with six years in the Wisconsin National Guard, Company M, 426th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Division before relocating to Texas in 1955 for enlistment in the United States Air Force. He was selected for advanced technical training in avionics as a jet mechanic after graduation and dedicated 17 years touring East Asia, including Taiwan, Thailand, and Okinawa where he met the love of his life, Tsuru.
Al received his Honorable Discharge at the rank of Master Sergeant in 1979 and worked at the Naval Air Rework Facility in Norfolk, VA until retiring in 1996. Al Rome was a serious, hardworking man of true integrity that earned him undeniable respect; however, friends and family will fondly remember him most for his generous heart, and quick, inventive humor. His high IQ and work ethic made him the go-to guy as a genuine Jack of all trades. As a strictly nonfiction reader, Al’s viewing preference was no nonsense documentaries and hobbies included working through virtually any puzzle he could get his hands on as well as caring for any injured and/or stray animal he encountered.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Bruno, Louise, and Norma; sister, Nancy; brother, Roger; wife, Tsuru; and grandson, George, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Dian Hafer & spouse, Ray Hafer; his son, George Rome & spouse, Diane Rome; four grandkids; five great-grandkids; and his faithful feline friend, Slick.
