Robert Norman Hamilton was born March 31, 1922 in Star, Mills County, Texas, the son of J.Y. and Eula Campbell Hamilton. He spent his growing up years in the Star and Evant areas and attended school at Evant.
He was a member of "The Greatest Generation" having served his country proudly during World War II. As a Navy machinist, he received training in San Diego, California and at New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in Alamogordo. He was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia before being sent to Weymouth, England aboard the ship Queen Mary. He participated in the preparation of landing craft for the D-Day invasion. He remained in the Naval Reserves after the war ended and was recalled during the Korean Conflict where he served in San Diego, California and Japan.
He worked as a mechanic and as a machinist at Fort Hood before an automobile accident left him a paraplegic. Although he was handicapped, he always found things to do and lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed fishing and operated the Evant Hunting Club for many years. He assisted his parents in the operation of Evant Funeral Home, was a salesman for Riley Gardner Memorial, built picture frames and other things from wood, and sharpened saws. He was always willing to help people and offer his witty comments to others!
He is survived by his wife LaJuan Hamilton of Evant; one daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Danny Jones of Caldwell, three grandchildren and their spouses, Katie and Josh Wright of Lago Vista, Becky and Kyle Ickes of Peoria, Arizona, and Ben and Katie Jones of Caldwell. He is also survived by two great grandchildren, Chance Hill and Zoe Jones as well as several cousins and a host of friends including special friends Danny and Robin Brey and their family of Salado, James Hudgins and his family of Temple.
