Lt. Col. Richard G. “Dick” Davis, 89, of Hamilton, Texas passed away peacefully at home on April 13, 2025. Born September 12, 1935, in Newton, Kansas, growing up in nearby Peabody, Dick was an active participant in athletics, band, and the family farm until he graduated from Peabody High School. While attending Kansas State University, Dick was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. As an R.O.T.C. participant during college, he earned his private pilot’s license. Upon graduating Dick became a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force and entered the Air Force pilot training program.
As a proud Officer in the Strategic Air Command, Dick flew several types of aircraft and served with distinction, earning many decorations and commendations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, for which he is memorialized at the National Air and Space Museum, Wall of Honor for the Distinguished Flying Cross Society. Upon termination of flying, Dick concluded his Air Force career in command-and-control positions, retiring after nearly 30 years of distinguished service. Dick’s assignments took him and his family all over the country and twice to Europe. Dick next served as a civilian advisor to Al Salam Aircraft Company, LTD. (Royal Saudi Air Force), spending 6 years in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Early in the Air Force career, he helped a young lady put the top up on her convertible MG during a rain shower. That young lady, Maxine, turned into the love of his life. During their married life, they enjoyed traveling all over the world. From Australia and New Zealand to Asia and Africa. From Europe to South America, and across North America.
Dick and Maxine had purchased a small ranch in the Texas hill country, to which they ultimately retired. Dick delighted in turning their place into a home base for their family. He loved beautifying the property, raising spotted donkeys, and relaxing with a beer on their front porch after a hard day’s work.
Dick’s life was all about service, to his country, his fellow service members, his church and community, and especially his family. He was preceded in death by his parents GS and Josie of Peabody, KS and his brothers Robert of Manhattan, KS and Steve of Kearney, NE. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Maxine of Hamilton, TX, his sons Eric (wife Lisa) of Pflugerville, TX and Kent (wife Monica) of Euless, TX and the light of his life, his granddaughter Sarah.
A memorial service will be held on June 7th at First Presbyterian Church in Hamilton, TX, with internment at the Dallas National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project.
