Gary was born in Hamilton, Texas at Hamilton Hospital and Clinic. He was the son of the late John W. Tyson and Oradell Siems Tyson. He was the second of their five boys. Pastor T.A. Drenlow baptized him July 22, 1951 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pottsville, Texas. Pastor David Ebert confirmed him on April 11, 1965 and Gary became a member of St John Lutheran Church in Hamilton. His confirmation verse is from the book of Matthew verse 28:20 “Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” He was raised in Blue Ridge and attended school in Hamilton High School. While in high school he ran track, played football and basketball.
After graduating he hauled hay during the summers to save up money for tuition at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. He graduated on August 18, 1974 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Science and Physical Education. He married Terry Hinton in March 1973. Gary and Terry had one daughter Shane.
After graduating college Gary was a coach and teacher in Mart, Paradise, Holland, Anna and Evant in Texas. In 1990, Gary went on to teach for TDJC in Gatesville. He started at Hughes and then opened the Woodman school unit where he was known as “King Pin”. He retired in 2013. His motto was “Drive over…Drive back.
After retirement Gary enjoyed farming and ranching while spending time with his family and friends.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his daughter Shane Tyson, “My Bride” Jayne Payne of 29 years, four brothers, Lee Roy and Karen, David and wife Kim, Jody and wife Kyleen, Don and wife Alanda, five nephews, three nieces, several uncles and aunts and other family members and his numerous friends from his life, school days and teaching.
