Dot was born in Blanco, Texas on September 12, 1943, the 3rd child of Jesse and Margaret Smith. Dot is survived by her husband, James (Jimmy) F. Long and her daughter and son-inlaw, Charlotte and Brett Kretzschmar and three grandchildren, Grace, Dakota, and Beth. Her extended family included Jim's children, Paul Long, Melanie Engelhardt and Bonnie Newton, their children and grandchildren, totaling 11 grandchildren and 5 greatgrandchildren. Dot's surviving siblings are Jimmie Smith of Rose Hill, KS and Marvin Smith of Mathis, TX; Dot was preceded in death by her parents, sister Linda Ash, and baby brother, who died at birth.
Dot graduated from Blanco High School in 1960 and attended South Austin College. She began her career as an Account Specialist with the Lower Colorado River Authority in the 1980s and retired after 20 years of service in 2002. She and Jimmy lived in Smithville, TX for a number of years and eventually moved to Hamilton, TX in 2009, where they would grow hay on their 60-acre ranch and enjoy watching the wildlife from their back porch.
Dot was an avid crafter and loved researching family history and genealogy. She was known by all to be a calm presence in a room, a great maker of peppermint cake and always willing to help with Thanksgiving and other holiday meals.
A visitation for Dorothy will be held Friday, November 8, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Riley Funeral Home, 402 W Main, Hamilton, Texas 76531. A graveside service will occur Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 10:00 AM at South Park Cemetery, 1310 North Main Street, Pearland, Texas 77581.
