I went with my son to see Carl in the museum where his art was. He had written  me letters showing me some of his techniques in painting. I learned so much from him. So sorry about his passing and blessings to all family members.

Carl and I were housemates for over two  years when we were students at the University of Texas.   He was a very romantic and sentimental guy.  One day he approached me where I was seated in my study area and rested his outstretched hand on the top of my bookshelves and looked out of the rear window over our beautifully landscaped back yard.  I looked up at him and saw Prince Valiant standing on a hillside viewing the valley below.  Ever since he has been my Prince Valiant.  I regret that I never told him this.  Although we seldom saw each other since our college days, I have always considered him to be one my dearest lifelong friends.

Carl was so kind and encouraging to our daughters and he and Peggy made a lasting impression on them.  We always felt so honored to know he and Peggy both.  Sorry I am just hearing about Carl’s death.  He was an incredible artist and incredible person.

Carl was my big pal.  I called him Ichabod and he called me Phoebe.  We met in the art department at the University of Texas.  He was so talented.  He really didn't need to take classes.  He had his work displayed in the hallway every semester- a great honor.  I only had my work up in the hall once!  He had a great sense of humor.  One of my fondest memories was sitting together with some other pals on the back seat of the bus all the way to New York City.  We laughed and laughed.  After graduation, even though we didn't live in the same city and no longer saw each other, I still miss his presence in the world.  The world lost a great artist.

Carl was a dear friend of mine in the art department at the University of Texas.  He was incredibly talented.  His work was beautiful.  After every grading period at least one of his works was put on display in the hall, an honor only for the best.  I only had one in the hall one time!  I admired him tremendously.
We were such pals.  I called him Ichabod and he called me phoebe......so many fun times, laughs, picnics and just generally enjoying each others company.
I'm sad, knowing he's no longer in the world.
Take flight Ichabod.  Make heaven a more beautiful place.

I called him "Ichabod" and he called me Phoebe.  We shared many fun times and a lot of laughs.  He was a fantastic artist.  His work was excellent and beautiful from the very start.  His paintings and drawings were hung in the hall every semester.  This was an honor only given to the very best.  He could have taught the classes he was enrolled in. He ended up teaching at the McNay  Art  Institute in San Antonio.  I hope his students realized how privileged they were to be taught by a true master.
Carl will be missed by his students and friends and admirers of his beautiful art.

Carl Rice was a major artistic person.  He excelled in many of the    arts. I am blessed to have one of his sketches/paintings.  It is one of his paintings that depicted how the low water crossing was one of  his themes to his paintings of the Hamiton county area that Carl Rice loved so much.
 Carl Rice truly loved Hamilton and all it stood for. All of us from Hamilton were blessed to be raised in Hamilton. The Class of 1957 which Carl Rice was in , was very much interested in higher level of education and in the purist of professional occupations. Carl Rice graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in Fine Arts. His  pantings/sketches been in many   exhibits in Texas and the US.

Condolences to the Embrey family. Carl was my distant cousin, we shared Jim Rice as a great and great great grandfather, respectively. Hamilton County was much in Carl's mind and heart. I asked him once if blood memory played much of a role in his art. "All of it," he replied. He will be much missed by friends, family and the art world. He was a special man.

I didn’t know Carl. But he was my dad’s best friend many years ago. And for me a one-time, too brief mentor of art — I took a class led by Carl at the San Antonio Art Institute years ago. I feel fortunate to have had time with him. And I’m fortunate he and my dad were River Rats.

Carl's grandfather, Rufus Rice, and my maternal great grandmother, Charity Rice Eidson, were brother and sister.   Among my fondest memories growing up are my visits to   Hamilton.  Carl and I played together while our mothers visited often at  his home.  There was (and still may be) a remarkable, unforgettable  feature outside in the back -- a sundial on a concrete pedestal.  How grateful I am that Carl captured through his artistry so many icons that live on the landscape of my memory.  With gratitude to you,  Carl, from your cousin, Martha McKay Jones.

Dawn and Rhys - I’m so very sorry to hear about your Dad. He was one of a kind and we have so many fond memories. His paintings we surround ourselves with only mean more now. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. 

I am so extremely sad for you, the family of Carl Embrey.  He was a friend and one of the major influences in my life.  I'm so glad he got to spend his last years in Hamilton, the place he loved and always painted.  The last time I talked to Carl was just after my husband passed away and I tried to get his phone number after he moved but, never could.  Again, I am so sorry.

Always enjoyed visits with the Embrey’s when they came to Hamilton. But my favorite memory is when Carl Rice took us through an exhibit of his artwork at the McNay. We all loved it. Prayers, Rhys and Dawn.

I remember him well. We had a lot of fun in band.  I knew he was smarter than most of us!! Nice looking boy to man also!!
