Dear Friends in Christ,

We didn't know Sheila very well, but we had the privilege of meeting her at a Leadership Conference hosted by The Prairie Centre for Christian Education, in Winnipeg in September 2022. A bunch of loud and excited Aussies was no threat to Sheila, who embraced us warmly and welcomed us with authentic interest and joy. 

During this year, our organisation, Christian Education National, has been delighted to partner with Edu Deo ministries where a few of our people interacted with Sheila online.  They have spoken of her joy and zest for life. 

As an organisation, we are thankful for the short experience we had of Sheila and we pray for all of you who mourn. She knew Jesus and she clearly lived for Him. What a comfort that must be.

I am so sorry to read about Sheila's passing.   She was a good friend of mine while at Redeemer College.   I can still see her big smile and hear her laughter in my my memory.    Jonathan, I am so sorry for your loss and I pray that you're surrounded by the love of friends and family to help you get through this.

My eulogy to Sheila 
“For I know that the Lord is great, And our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the Lord pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places.”

God has decided to take his beautiful daughter away in times like this. Though so full of life and very happy about God’s work, God loves you and has called you earlier to go and rest. Take lead we shall meet on the beautiful Shore.

Our deepest condolences go to Jonathan and all of Sheila’s loved ones, including everyone at EduDeo.  Our journey with Sheila crossed paths several times.  As a church, it was an honour for us as members of Fellowship CRC-Brighton, to support her in her Christ-centered education mission with teachers in Nigeria, and as colleagues, exchanging emails, course material and news about each other’s walking-together journey in Africa was always an encouraging experience.  We were especially delighted to hear in January of this year that Sheila was able to follow up the work in our much-loved Ethiopia!  Our dreams were that she would continue this for many, many years, but it was not to be, however, her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched. Praise God!

Sheila was an extraordinary friend, a soul so selfless and compassionate that her presence felt like a gentle embrace in both the brightest moments and the darkest hours. Today, I do not  want to mourn her untimely departure but to celebrate the profound impact she had on my/our lives.

She was the embodiment of selflessness, stood by my side when others faltered and offered unwavering support during the most challenging times. When I stumbled in my faith in life, she remained a steadfast pillar, refusing to let me face my battles alone. In moments of loss, through the heartbreaking ordeal of deep pain, she was my solace, my confidante, and the keeper of my heart.

Her love transcended boundaries, crossing continents and cultures as she embraced my Nigerian heritage with open arms. From learning every nuance of my culture to acting like a seasoned Nigerian mom when my first child arrived, her commitment knew no bounds. She effortlessly wove herself into the fabric of our lives, leaving an indelible mark.

Her love wasn't confined to me alone; it radiated outward, touching the lives of all fortunate enough to call her a friend. She became a beacon of light for my entire circle, reading to children, cradling them in warmth, and generously offering her time as a babysitter when needed. In moments of need, she gave unconditionally, and when miles separated you, she traversed the distance, proving that true friendship knows no geographical limits.

Today, the weight of her absence feels insurmountable, the pain too raw to process. But as we navigate this difficult terrain of grief, let us remember her with joy for the countless moments of laughter, with gratitude for the profound impact she had on our lives, and with love for the beautiful soul that graced us with her presence.

In the tapestry of our memories, she will forever remain an irreplaceable thread, weaving a story of love, friendship, and shared journeys. May her spirit find eternal peace.

Sheila, celebrating Christmas in heaven, beyond anything we can imagine. We met Sheila in Nigeria, She lived in a tiny house across from us in a walled compound, Her home was always full of young people, singing, laughing, and simply sharing life. She loved everyone, brought joy and light wherever she went. Her passion for children, and learning were often at the center of her life as she shared herself in ministry with anyone who came into her path.  Her love of her Saviour and Lord shone into every corner of her life. We were blessed to have Sheila and Jonathan stay with us for several months as she continued her calling in Canada. Our hearts go out to Jonathan, her parents and her extended family. Friends all over the world share in  the loss of a very dear friend and celebrate her life . Shelia’s laughter and deep caring was evident every time we communicated. Her selflessness will be remembered 💚

I worked with Sheila at the American School of Abuja- she was a woman who walked in joy and integrity, shining with her love of Christ in whatever she did.  Shiela had a deep impact on my life- she was a talented teacher who had a passion for the power of education that was contagious. She was funny and real and kind - she saw and accepted people for who they were- her example on more than one occasion challenging me to be a better person.
I had the opportunity to go on two trips with Sheila- to Republic of Benin in 2008 and Kenya in 2010. Both were filled with adventures and mishaps- riding motorcycle taxis down dusty roads, stressful border crossings where half clothed police threatened us for not having the right papers (the only time I ever saw Sheila angry), ancient sea side fortresses, getting burned to a crisp snorkeling in the Indian Ocean and wandering sunbathed island villages. 
Most important- of course- was the incredible work Sheila did to empower children through education.  I know her legacy will live on, and hope that I too can contribute to it.
I am honored to be able to say Sheila was my friend,and I know that there is much rejoicing that she is home- I can here her Father saying “Well Done”.

My sincerest sympathies for you and your family in your time of sorrow. May the love and the beauty of their life be the sunshine in your darkness. May you find comfort and warmth from those closest to you. You are in my constant thoughts during these difficult days.

We met Sheila twice, the first time when she was 4 years old, when i was working on the Hill Top farm. The second time she visited us in Holland with Evelyn and her grandmother (our tante Mieke).
We were shocked to hear she passed away at such a young age.

My dear friend, my support system, my Ajala the traveller like I usually call you words fail me, I still feel like calling your phone and hoping you pick up..Ha!!!  the vacuum behind u let only God can fill it.
Sheila you were like a sister to me and a second mum to my daughter (Efe).your kind heart and cheerful smiles always brighten up our day, with you there was always a solution to any problem. The way you cared for us like we were blood I look around my house and everything in it remind me of you as you ensured I got all I needed when I moved into my apartment. 
It’s very hard to loose you, but my friend I know u lived a very good life  one of good  legacy ,I always admire your love for God .We know you are in a better place. Efe was hearing your name over the weekend and she asked of you and I told her you are in Heaven with God.
She will miss u dearly ,my friend ,my Ajala the traveller(like we say in Nigeria). I will assume  that  u have travelled once again till we meet on the last day.
I pray that God will  fill the vacuum you left in the hearts of everyone you loved.

I am so sorry as well as shocked at the sudden passing of Sheila. I remember her fondly having been able to work with her and visit a number of Christian schools with her in Nigeria.  She was appreciated and honored by the schools and people with whom she worked.

I was excited to discover that she took upon herself the running  of the Working Together Program, a contribution to the development of  deeper knowledge and practice of teachers in Christian schools in Africa. in fact in several places around the world. I was privileged to have visited Nigeria and was present at several interactions she had with schools and school personnel.

It was such a joy and honour to teach with Sheila during her short time at Calvin Christian School. I so appreciated her warmth, humour, positivity, and passion. She was an inspiration to me as someone who saw beyond the present, who reached far out into the world, and who loved widely and deeply. We are all so blessed to have had her in our lives, and we will all greatly miss her. My sincere condolences to all her family and friends. God's love, comfort, and peace to you as you mourn this great loss of dear Sheila.

Sheila exuded joy. Her childlike faith and deep love for Jesus and all of Creation brought love and light to many moments. 

My favourite memories with Sheila are serving with her in Ethiopia. In particular, I remember her deciding to start singing with our participants (all except one were men by the way) to wake them up after lunch and bring God a little glory. As a high school teacher, I was sceptical. But her beautiful voice and charisma had a room full of grown men dancing and singing along to little kindergarten songs.  Her zest for life was infectious, and you could not help but experience the love of God when with her. She made you want to celebrate being a beloved child of God just as much as she did. 

Sheila, thank you for loving us all so well. Johnathan, may the arms of Jesus our saviour and your community enfold you. Prayers for peace that surpasses all understanding.

Sheila was such a a sweetheart with a heart of gold, silver and gemstones. She doesn't have to know you personally to like you. She loves everyone hence the job she does with kids and the world at large. She is a legend. We love you Sheila, but God wants you to come work in His kingdom. Who are we to ask Him why? Your life and the work you did on earth will continue to radiate God's love and mercies. Rest in peace Sheila. You will never be forgotten.

To Sheila’s family -

I loved my time working with Sheila in JK/SK as an EA (with Covid restrictions no less!) She was such a giving person and I saw her pour herself into her students daily and unselfishly. My favourite memory was once at carpet time sitting with all the students one little person asked “do you have any kids?” Sheila replied “I don’t! But I consider all of you to be my children to take care of when I teach you”. It perfectly captures the way she tried to care for each student and nurture their strengths. 

As an EA, I watched the classroom teacher closely every day and Sheila was someone who lived her life to the fullest putting her best effort forward.  She was filled with enthusiasm for her task, the root of which is “in theos” - I feel that encompasses her to a T. Possessed and inspired by the God she so deeply loved. 

Much love to your family as you grieve this loss heavily and celebrate lightly knowing Sheila is home and perfectly whole.

Dear Jonathan, Steve and your whole families, please accept my deepest sympathy.  The loss of Sheila is devastating to all our community.  My heart goes out to you all.

Sheila to me was just like Jesus walking through this world.  She invited the children to her and they came in flocks.  Adults felt privileged to stand in her light.  In her travels, she mentored disciples; disciples of Christ; leaving them with the tools to educate their communities.  There is now a huge empty space without her.  Sheila was a beacon of light, love and faith always.

Sheila’s light shone in the Open Homes Hamilton community. Her smile light up any room, she could put any situation at ease, and the kids loved her games at the summer picnics. 
Sheila will be incredibly missed. My prayers are with you Jonathan, and the entire family.

This picture was taken on "100 Day". Sheila told me she had all the clothes and accessories to be the Oma, so naturally (because I had short hair and some of my Dad's old clothes), I would be the Opa. We both laughed with pleasure and excitement, when we first saw each other that day. Obviously, we just had to take a picture!

Sheila was my coworker when I first started working at CCS. We worked together in 1 of the 3 kindergarten classes. Sheila had a bubbly personality and a passionate excitedness for teaching. Ideas just poured out of her. She was full of encouragement for her students. Her eyes lit up while she talked. Sheila was not afraid to show her emotions. I remember when she was preparing to teach about the  Lord's Supper, she told me she would most likely shed some tears...and she did. She did not hide that from the students and explained to them why she was emotional. It was a beautiful and touching moment. 

I also witnessed Sheila translating during an online meeting for Edu Deo. Eventhough Sheila loved teaching, I could see and hear that her heart belonged to that ministry. When she told me that she accepted a job with Edu Deo, I told her that I knew that that was where she truly belonged.

Sheila and I talked a lot about so many things. Sometimes we would butt heads, but we could always talk it out. I would give her clothes I didn't want anymore. She would wear them to work and I would tell her that she wore it better than I ever did. ;)

Sheila will be immensely missed by family, friends and coworkers across the world. The impact she made on everyone was profound. My deepest condolences to everyone during this difficult time of loss. Praying for you all.

I am still in shock with very limited words, but my heart is filled with gratitude to have shared a large chunk of my life with you.

It still does not seem real that our beloved Sheila is gone. My mind cannot comprehend this. It was a gift to call her friend and colleague. Our lives are richer because of her.

So many memories. 
Last December, we met Sheila in Edmonton and watched a World Cup match together.

Anyone who played games with Sheila knows that you need to earn a win against Game Champion Sheila! Oh how we loved playing games with her!

In 2018, Jonathan and Sheila visited us in South Africa. It was such a gift to get time together in person after years of being apart! We enjoyed each other so much I forgot to take a lot of photos - but cherishing these few I do have!

Sheila was so generous in the love she extended to friends and family! From her time to finances to resources like her living space, she gave with an eager and open heart. It was wonderful when we got to give back a little! This particular day was Canadian Thanksgiving. The kids helped put together a special breakfast for Aunty Sheila. When I remember Sheila, her big, warm, genuine smile is the first thing that comes to mind!
