Our deepest condolences to the family. Your dear mom used to take me to the CNE when I was a kid. And my brother, Jeffery Hoo used to play with the boys at 99 John St. N.  Jeffery said that your mom took Jeffery on his one and only childhood vacation to the 1000 islands for one week.  A fond memory for Jeffery.  Jeffery would love to get in touch with the boys. It was instant friendship when Bea and I first met. We worked together at a Chinese take-out and I remembered our first day where we just started chatting with each other and couldn’t stop. That chatter continued for the next 53 years. 

You’re lucky if you find a kindred spirit in your life, and that was Bea for me. We could talk about anything and anyone, and she was a terrific sounding board and advisor. I have fond memories of our many deep life conversations, gossiping about old Chinatown, teaching her how to disco-dance, and lots of laughs at her kitchen table. 

Bea was uncomplicated -- a simple, modest soul who was gifted with a huge heart and no-nonsense wisdom. She expected nothing out of life but had the grace to move forward wherever it falls. She had no formal education but she was naturally street-smart, spoke fluent French and had a keen business sense (she taught me how to read the stock pages).

But her priority in life was always her family. She considered herself lucky in having a wonderful husband like her Tom, whom she often referred to as her rescuer. Their relationship was of total respect and they worked really hard in ensuring their family had a roof over their heads and plenty of food on the table. It’s a guarantee that you will always be warmly treated to a home-cooked meal once you enter their door. Bea had a natural green thumb and was proud of her flower garden that showcased her favourite sunflowers. 

The last few years have been tough on her but her spirit never wavered. She was still the same lovely Bea I knew – still tough, still curious, still caring while flashing that memorable smile.

For now, our chats have been postponed but it will start up again the next time I see her. Can’t wait to hear that infectious laugh again, along with a plate of her delicious tuna fish sandwich and a big slice of Tom’s pumpkin pie (with whipped cream)!
