I was one of Mark's work colleagues, he was such a friendly, warm genuine person. He always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. I remember how much he loved to travel and always recommended the lovely places he had visited. I send my warmest and heartfelt sympathy to the family. Hold the memories close to your heart and he will always be with you.

Whether is was Hallowe'en parties, time at Stagger Inn or hiking around British Columbia; Mark had a penchant for life.

Sometimes when I look up at the stars I am reminded of Mark standing on Grouse Mountain playing his harmonica under the Milky Way reciting:

Now when I look up at the stars I will always be reminded of him...he'll be one of them.


There are no words to express the sadness we feel over Mark’s passing. Our hearts go out to Bernie, the boys and family at this very difficult time. He was one of those people who you couldn't help but enjoy being in his company. I knew Mark growing up as a child as he was my neighbour.  I will never forget how kind he was, and he and the Hobsons were like a second family to me, so open and welcoming.  I will forever cherish the memories I have of Mark.  He will be missed.

I only met Mark maybe 3-4 times. I absolutely loved that even tho we only engaged those 3-4 times, (he would have been the father of my nephew-in-law) he was so kind, funny and accepting. I loved that about him. He included me (us) as part of the family and I'll always remember that about him. He was a very kind and loving soul. My wife Joyce, myself, daughter Joslyn and son-in-law Josh are so truly saddened by the passing of fun, fantastic and wee bit crazy cousin Mark.  He played with me from 1953 to his passing.  For a period of time in the 1950’s, I was Mark’s surrogate brother.  We hung around Scarboro, did stuff like two kids would.  I was 9 and he was 6 years old when Mark and I suffered the loss of his older brother Michael.  But we prevailed.

Each of us had a keen interest in music: blues, rock and folk.  I have fond memories of my cool cousin copying me a favourite CD of both of ours: Fathers and Sons (Muddy Waters) and yes, I too am an avid fan of John Prine (Please Don’t Bury me)—give my stomach to Milwaukee if they run out of beer.

Mark was so cool to hang with when we did.  Our geographical locations (he in Ontario and me in BC) unfortunately kept us separate as we lived our lives of work, raising families and in our ways enjoying life.  My family, mostly in British Columbia: Mark, Bernadette and sons in the Toronto area.

We have all suffered a huge loss.  For me a cousin, friend and musicologist. For you a loving husband, a great Dad, and a grandad.

We were brought up to care, be honest and be fun loving. And cousin, Mark, you succeeded on all counts. See you in heaven.

It's Bill Jeffery, Jon & Katie's Uncle in NS.  I first met Mark at Jon & Katie's wedding.  We immediately hit it off, and hung out together for most of the evening.  I could tell right away that here was a very special man, full of warmth, love & kindness and so intelligent also.  Ever since that time, I always    asked about when he and Bernie would be visiting, as I wanted to see them both.  Alas, during the two years when the pandemic was worst, I couldn't see them.  But Mark's spirit lives on through his children and grandchildren.  To Bernie, Jon, Katie, Connor, Ceilidh and the rest of the family, my heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you.              I'm so shocked and at a loss of words hearing about Mark's passing. I only have met you guys maybe a handful of times at Christmas and in the Summer. Mark was such a wonderful person I loved our talks,our hockey banter and just being around such a joyful man. He was so positive and happy. I'm heartbroken that I won't see him again, however I'm so grateful that I did have the privilege of meeting him and having the time with him I did get. I had the privilege of sitting close to him when we still had cubicles in the office and remember him as the happy, always smiling, upbeat person that he was. A true pleasure to be around. He knew that I have a passion for music, and generously shared his library of great music with me. When I heard the news of Mark's passing this morning I immediately thought of all the hours we logged together in one car or another on the way to work. The path from Pickering to Mississauga (and back) on the 401, was filled with so many conversations (and naps, Mark napped like a champ!). He had so many stories about life and family, kept us laughing with jokes, supported as we vented about work. You can't help but get to know someone when you log countless hours in traffic! Mark kept the carpool "The Bus" going for many years and those of us who were brought together for our trek to work will remember him fondly. He was such a genuine and loving human being and my heart so is heavy today knowing that he is no longer enjoying his retirement with his family.

I am at a loss to find the words to help you in this time of grief and sorrow that you all must be going through. I had the opportunity to work with Mark and carpool with him for many years. Mark was always a joy to work with and we had many laughs during those years. He always had a smile on his face, positive advice and was always there to lend a hand or ear when needed. We had many conversations over the years and what always came through was his love for you Bernadette, your boys, daughters-in-law, you’re your grandchildren and his faith. When he was getting ready to retire, he could not wait to spend more time with the family. I do hope that he was able to accomplish this. Bernadette, I can't find the words to tell you how devastated I am for your loss.  How will I ever forget Mark's support of our choir,  and for you, as he waited for you after Mass at the bottom of the loft stairs every Sunday.  I am deeply saddened by the passing of Uncle Mark. He was a good man and a wonderful uncle. I have many fond childhood memories of him including his Donald Duck voice and Leisure Cottage bingo in the rec hall, which I think many of his nieces and nephews share. He always showed great kindness to us growing up as well as to our own children.

Growing up, the whole Hobson family always felt like an extension of ours. I’ll never forget Mark’s famous Donald Duck impression & his cherry demeanour.  I’m grateful for our spontaneous Sunday night hangout at the beginning of this summer & that you guys made it out to our wedding.
