  Heartfelt Message from Steve Savich October 24, 2011.


    I would like to thank all of you for coming here today and especially those who spoke so kindly of Marie today.  With all what was said; I think that there is little left for me to say. But; I do have many people to thank for all the care that Marie received over the past year.
 From the Juravinski Cancer Center, I would like to thank many; Dr. Mark Lavigne and his staff at Clinic –D, the Chemotherapy staff, Dr. Daze in radiology and his stall, Dr. Slaven in Palliative Care and the Co-Ordinater, nurse Karen as well as all the volunteers.
 Thank you to St. Joseph's Hospital's Dr.  Christian Finley and his team as well as Dr. Ann Boyle and Dr. Ann Wood from Palliative Care. They were a great comfort to Marie. I would also like to Thank Marie's family doctor, Dr. Joyce Zuzulak and Dr. Dan Bowser, Marie's surgeon.
 One of Marie's wishes was that she would go to the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice when her time was near the end. With the help from the palliative care doctors, this was arranged. I can't begin to say how grateful I am that Marie was able to be at the Hospice.  The staff and their volunteers were so caring and supportive of all our family and friends. They are truly remarkable and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.
 I want to thank my co-workers at Kvaerner for all the support that has been extended to Marie and I over this past year. Marie enjoyed the gifts of followers and fruit baskets. Marie often said she was amazed at the support Kvaerner has shown us and we so appreciated their help.
  I can't say enough about our family and friends. All of you are amazing. You have provided us with great visits, many dinners, great love, support and comfort with some good stories and laughs too. Marie just loved all the girls stopping by for a cup of tea and a chit chat. Marie cherished all of her nieces and nephews. All of your visits were very special for her.

 Marie, you were my wife, my lover and my best friend. We shared a great life together. We endured a few ups and downs over our time together. We have great kids and three beautiful granddaughters.  I have always admired your strength, charisma, and the love and kindness you show to others. 
 I not only loved you but I adored you.

I feel lucky and I feel blessed.
I feel fortunate that I grew up my whole life with an Aunt Marie… and so many didn't.
You try to think of words that are supposed to capture everything that you want to say about a person but the words aren't there.
Aunt Marie was kind, charismatic, loving and strong… you knew there was always a story with a smile waiting for you at Aunt Marie's house…  and you always knew that when you needed someone in your corner… she was ready for a fight… she was a protector…Our family is fill of them.
There is no better example that we've seen this past week. We've once again been left to face the loss of someone we could never imagine losing.. So we came together.
And we protect each other.
And we learned that from people like my Dad … and Aunt Marie … and each other.
We've shared stories, and photographs and laughs and tears.
Last Thursday, our world changed. It's been significantly altered and there is something missing from all of us. That will never be the same… but the world goes on.
On the other hand, heaven wouldn't be heaven without people like Aunt Marie… She's needed there now. And now we have one more angel looking over our shoulder as the rest of us go on... And we have a good one.
Aunt Marie believed that your spirit stays with the ones you love long after you've passed.
I knew that Aunt Marie is still with us because I can feel her here… and I can still see her here in my Mom… and in my aunts and uncles… and in my brother and cousins. Aunt Marie's spirit is very much in all of us.
 And I know going forward that there will be those days when things don't seem to be going according to plan… and I'm wondering why nothing seems to be going right.
And   I‘ll start to see the signs… and there'll be one too many for me to know that it's not a coincidence…because Aunt Marie was never shy to let you know that she's there when you need her.
And I'll once again be reminded of how lucky and blessed and fortunate I am for having my Aunt Marie. I love you Aunt Marie… and we all miss you.

Good Morning Everyone, 
On behalf of our Macassa Team I wanted to share with you that Marie Savich, one of our dedicated PSW team members, has passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by her family at the Bob Kemp Hospice.  
Marie was a much loved and valued member of our Lodge team over the last 15 years.  As many will attest Marie had a true passion and commitment to her work, she was kind, caring and had a very quick wit.  We will remember the care she offered to so many residents in her 15 years at the Lodges and the many many lasting friendships she had with members of our team.  Throughout her illness Marie demonstrated such strength and resolve, and she was able to maintain that beautiful twinkle in her eyes.
Arrangements for Marie are not yet known but we will share them with all of you as they become available.  In recognition of Marie's passing we will be lowering the flag outside our Home to half mast.

An Irish Blessing - for You Marie!

     Steve, Colleen, Derek, Jamie, and all of Marie's family and friends. As you know, I have struggled to write a poem about Marie, but at 3:41 am this morning, the reason became abundantly clear. The phone rang at that moment, I said "hello" three times, no answer. Of course when I looked at call display, it said private. I got back into bed a little annoyed and what follows; just flowed out of me. I am writing this down at five am. I believe Marie was telling me she had a message for everyone, and that she knew others would tell stories, and have reflections of her at the funeral, but she has used me to give all of you a final gift to all who loved her.

On a quiet afternoon, just before she died,
"I'm a coward" I confessed, and I began to cry
Marie reached out and took my hand, unselfish to the end,
I realized that moment I was losing much more than a friend
We talked about her life then, which had been filled with hopes and dreams,
Of highs, and lows, the simple things, she had all that to extremes
Her love of friends and family, her joy, and yes her tears,
Of all the memories she treasured, and all who she held dear.
"I'm not afraid" she told me, and "I don't feel any pain"
"There isn't anything I've done, that I wouldn't do again"
"I know it won't be long now, till I see those gone before"
"And I know that I'll be welcomed, when I get to Heaven's Door"
The afternoon was peaceful, the atmosphere serene,
Her look of calm acceptance, the most comforting I've seen
"I know you won't forget me, I'll be everywhere you look"
A gentle rain, new fallen snow, a cup of tea, a book"
She said, "When you tell my stories, do so with a smile"
"Let there be no sadness, just remember me for a while"
She nodded off to sleep then, and as I turned to go,
I knew this was our last goodbye, and that I loved her so.
I had a revelation of what she was trying to say
"Grieve my loss, and then get on with life, live each and every day"
"Remember to love each other; don't waste time on petty things"
"And cherish every moment, and the joy that life can bring"

Steve, Colleen, Derek, family and Friends:

What a wonderful tribute for Marie to see all of you here today.The love and support all of of you have shown Steve, Colleen and  Derek has simply been overwhelming.

How fortunate that four of the Kelly "clan" came to Canada in 1971. Joan had arrived in Canada first. She knew there would be far more opportunities for her brothers and sisters in Canada. It was so tragic that the Kellys lost their parents at such a young age. With Joan's encouragement; Marie, Ann, Eugene and Rose arrived in Hamilton.
Brendan came two years later. It was no surprise the Kellys soon had many friends in Hamilton. The Sullivan and Byrne families were a great support and still are today. how brave it was to come to a new country to start a new life. Marie was a young woman, just nineteen. The Kellys worked very hard to get jobs and settle in Hamilton. Ann, Eugene and Rose were enrolled in school. Joan, Marie and Brendan were working to support the family. Marie showed me a house they once rented. the cost of heating the house was more than their rent. They were determined to manage and they did.

Marie's first job was at the Cambridge Clothing plant in Hamilton. She did similar work in textiles back home in Dublin. Joan already worked at Dofasco. Marie would soon work there too. Marie made friends wherever she went. the workplace can become a place for new friendships too. Joan worked with her friend, Sheila Foey.Sheila became a dear friend. There was no doubt, Sheila became another Kelly sister.

I know it was not just Hamilton's gain when the Kelly's came to Hamilton. The  Savich family had the pleasure to welcome Marie. Marie was working at Dofasco when she met a handsome "hairy" young man, who was smitten! Steve knew right away Marie was "the one". Well, I've been told recently, that Marie had her eye on Steve. Marie was quoted: "Who is that guy over there?(Steve was driving a truck at Dofasco) I'm going to marry him!" Many times, I have heard say that Marie was the best thing that ever happened to him. It brings a smile when I hear Steve affectionately call Marie "chicken". The next best thing happened when Colleen and Derek came along. I know Marie, very lovingly, said to our Dad that she knew our Dad longer than her own Dad.Marie's Dad passed away so young. Marie was so special to our Mom and Dad.She brought sunshine and laughter into their home. She will always be the sister I did not have. Now don't get me wrong, I am so happy to have Steve too. He is a great brother even though I don't get to boss him much anymore.

When I think of Marie, it is her love for her family that stands out like a bright light. When I say family, I must also include all her dear friends. Marie had the largest "extended" family of anyone that I know. It was always such a delight to hear her talk about her nieces and nephews. She was so proud and happy that Colleen and Derek grew up knowing their cousins and sharing many, many happy times. Marie was always our special one to talk with about our joys and sad moments. Marie would always remain close to her beloved sister Kathleen, brothers Micheal and Thomas, brother-in-law Fred and her nieces Leah, Sinead, and nephew Fred and their children back home in Ireland.Marie returned home many times to visit. Marie, always giving of herself, returned to help dear Kathleen and her family through her illness and passing. She adored her brother Micheal and enjoyed his visits to Hamilton. There are still many friends back home - Bridget Daleo, Betty Green, Delores and Bill McDonald were long time childhood friends.

Marie had such deep affection for the Savich family in Valleyfield, Quebec. Montreal was one of her favourite cities. She enjoyed visiting our aunts, uncles and cousins. We had great fun at Uncle Peter, Aunt Ray, Gaston and Monique's island. She enjoyed the fish fry dinners. She was a great support to Aunt Jacqueline. Our aunt was recovering from breast cancer surgery and treatments. Our Uncle Nick lover laughter and the many stories she told us.

Marie was never one to let anyone out especially family. She enjoyed the Tepsich side of the family too. she loved the conversations and family get-togethers with our aunts, uncles and cousins. She made time for everyone.

Marie was such a patient listener. She would offer kind words of advice and support. You always came away feeling so much better. Marie's encouraging words helped us believe that things would be alright. She loved having her nieces and nephews, family and her many friends drop by for a tea and a chat.

There were many gatherings all year round. Fun and laughter and great food were all part of the occasion. This was family.

I must mention Marie & Steve's many friends at the Irish Canadian Club of Hamilton. Marie and Steve joined the club well over thirty years ago. These friendships still exist today. This special group organized dozens of get-togethers and fund raising for so many worthwhile causes. Marie and Steve and all the Kelly's gave to much of their time to the club. Over the years, I believe Steve became more Irish than the Kellys. Irish music always added so much to those fun evenings. I can't forget the annual "Kelly Christmas Gift Exchange" and fabulous pot luck dinner. What a great family time to be together. This was such a happy time.

Friends were so special to Marie. If you were a friend of Marie's, you were a friend for life. Just ask Darlene, Janice, Sandy and their husbands, Rich, Frank and Vinnie. They shared many happy times together. Throughout this difficult time, they were there for Marie and Steve. They were family to Marie. her dear friend , Ann Byrne, has know the Kellys since they arrived in Hamilton. I know I have not mentioned so many other wonderful friends and I do know there were many. How wonderful Steve's Irish band members quickly arrange to play at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice. Marie's bed was wheeled to a sitting room near the band. We are sure she heard the music dedicated to her.

I know that Marie valued education not only for her children and family, but for herself. We were so proud of Marie when she received her secondary equivalency. I remember Marie saying to me that she could not see herself working in an office setting. She knew she needed to be with people. It was at that time our Dad was a resident at Macassa Lodge. A nursing supervisor at Macassa quickly recognized Marie's devotion and caring for Dad. The nursing supervisor suggested to Marie, "Why don't you go into nursing, you are a natural!"  Marie had one problem, At least she viewed it as an obstacle. She fainted at the sight of blood! I have been told that Marie fainted when she saw a dog with a black tongue! She admitted this concern to the nurse. She reassured Marie that she would not see blood working in a nursing home. She encouraged her to take the Personal Support Worker course. Marie took that advice. Marie, nursing and Macassa Lodge developed a very special Bond. She loved the residents as much as they loved her. She gave Macassa fifteen years of dedication, friendship and lots of love. This was Marie's calling.

Marie loved to travel. Those travelling triplets-Marie, Ann and Sheila had great fun. They had many adventures in Italy, Panama. New York City, Ireland, Florida, Cuba, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and Arizona. Their most recent trip to Chicago was just last April this year. She had a great time in Mexico with Steve and some friends, cycling in Ireland and touring the Rockies. I am sure I left out a few places.

many if you here would agree, there were not many times when you did not see Marie knitting needled in her hands, She rarely chose "easy" patterns. She enjoyed the challenging ones. Steve. I will let you in on a little secret. You will find, needles, patterns, and yarn in every cubby hole in the house! Marie had other passions too. She was an avid reader - classics, mysteries, sociology, current events. She enjoyed film. Marie, Sheila and Ann went to the movies regularly.  They attended the Toronto International Film Festival several times. She told me doing crossword puzzles were going to be her brain activity to prevent dementia. Now Steve and Derek continue the activity.

What support she gave to the Ride to Conquer Cancer cycling event. How proud we all were as we watched Derek & his Mom finish the inaugural event four years ago. Steve joined them another year. Then Micheal joined the event. We can't forget the massive fund raising. Marie was determined the money would be raised. many of her friends helped too. Marie became an expert Belgium cookie maker thanks to Sandy's tutoring.

What a joy it has been for Marie and Steve to watch Colleen and Derek grow up to be happy, strong, confident, successful and as caring as their parents. Awesome job! The delight for Marie and Steve that Colleen, Jamie and  the three little ones moved to the Rosedale neighbourhood. Now there would be more time  to enjoy their granddaughters and watch them grow. I know family is so important to Colleen. It felt so goof to have Mom and Dad just a few blocks away.  How proud Marie must feel as she watched Derek choose a new career path and return to school. What a joyous time when Jamie joined the family. The affection Marie and Jamie had for each other was instant. Their sense of humour matched perfectly. I have been told Jamie was not completely sure what he was getting into when he started dating Colleen. he kept hearing people talking about Chuck. It was Marie's idea. She did not want Jamie to know she was talking about him, even when he was in the same room with everyone else so, so she called him Chuck!

The special highlight for Marie and Steve are their three beautiful granddaughters - Kayla, Rosetta, and Samantha. Now Janie, I am not leaving you out! You had a big part in this too! What joy the little ones have brought.What pride and happiness Marie felt from the first day of their birth. Marie actually played a very important part at the time of Sammy's birth. Marie was the EMS driver to the  Maternity Ward at St. Joe's. Marie was so conscious of Colleen's contractions, perhaps a little paranoid. They were getting closer and closer. Colleen pleaded with her Mom: "Just drive Mom- get me to the hospital!"  In less than three hours little Sammy came into the world. By the way, dear Jamie made it to the hospital in time! What a special visit Marie made the next day. She took Kayla and Rosie with Jamie to meet their new baby sister! Marie loved baking birthday cakes and cookies. Not only did she love the little ones, her three little princesses dearly loved their Nana. Nana's sleepovers were the best! Those of you here, who have grandchildren or you are that special aunt, uncle or cousin know that joy.

Marie faced her illness so bravely. She  was determined to live life to the fullest. And she did. We see many photographs here of Marie enjoying life with family and friends. Her smiles make us smile. Anyone, who knew Marie, gained something so special. We will always remember her compassion, her optimism, her zest for life, her laughter and her caring nature. She meant so much to so many people. To know her is to love her. Steve, Colleen, Derek and Jamie, you were there for her. She made you strong. It is so very sad to lose her. In her last hours, the family gathered around her to comfort her and let her know she was loved so much. She would want us all to go on. Those special memories of her bring on smiles and laughter. Just being in Steve and Marie's home, I see Marie everywhere- cooking up a storm, cuddling the little ones, knitting, on the phone with family and friends. As I finished writing these words for you today, I went back and underscored the words I have used over and over again - love, loving, support, joy, friendship, smile, special, affection, family, caring, proud, life, laughter. This was Marie. We have a new star in the sky. She is shining bright. Whenever you feel very happy or perhaps a little down, just think of Marie, look up at her star, feel her love and know she is with each of us.

On behalf of the family, we would like to thank Marie's heath care teams at the Juravinski Hospital. St. Joseph's Hospital and especially the loving care and support at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice.

We thank the many friends and family for their love and support. We appreciate the visits and your kind words of love and support. Thanks so much for the delicious meals many of you have brought to Steve's home.

Hello, I am Sheila Foey, and I am Marie's best friend.  Or I thought I was Marie's best friend (in reference to the previous glowing testimonials).

Forty years ago, I was introduced to a wisp of a girl from Ireland, Marie, and her brother Eugene, sisters Rose and Ann.  

I remember I had celebrated my 21st birthday a few months before and I kept saying I was old.  Marie looked at me and shook her head.  As the years went by and we celebrated many of my birthdays, Marie teased me about that every year.

We were not best friends right away; it took about five years of getting to know each other and socializing. 
 
Marie and Steve were engaged after two weeks of dating.  I asked her, “Why Steve?”   She answered softly, “He thinks I am perfect”.  Steve still thinks this.  Marie knew a keeper when she saw one. 

Marie's love for children was a pleasure to watch and it extended well beyond her own family.

Once I dropped by and she was knitting a “Curious George” sweater and I asked who the sweater was for.  She answered, “A girl I work with grandson is very ill and he adores Curious George so I think he will love this sweater.”  He did.

That was Marie; you all have heard the expression “It is all about me”.  It was never about Marie, she was always thinking of others.

A couple of months ago, a group of us, took the kids, to the Lion Safari. We had a picnic lunch and Marie gave Ya's son, Emanuel, a taste of some Irish cheese.  Now this cheese has a bite to it – it is not Kraft slices – Emanuel loved it and kept coming back for more and more. She was tickled he loved Irish Cheese and she promised to get him more.
About two weeks ago, I was visiting and so was Eugene and I heard her ask him to pick up some Irish Cheese for Emanuel the next time he goes to the border.  Steve says he will look after getting the cheese to Emanuel. 

Marie was always happiest outdoors, climbing the Rosedale steps, walking on trails, walking, and cycling.  In August, Ann, Brendan, Marie, and I visited the Elora Gorge.
We did what everyone does who visits Elora, some shopping; we ate a great lunch and then had a two hour hike.
This was in August, two months ago and she felt wonderful that day and I will always remember how she was so thrilled to be there. 

I will miss her always. \

   Marie was a wonderful lady to many people. She had a loving heart & showed kindness to all. She had an inner strength that is an inspiration to us.

   I feel honoured to have had Marie as a friend. I hope you & your family share memories of good times not just the bad times & have laughter not just tears.

My words on Aunt Marie

Aunt Marie had that something special.
I don't know what to call it, or how to explain it.
But, it was her gift. 
 
Part of it, was how she could make us laugh, or that she could make everything more special,
just because she was there. 
A simple bike ride or hike or baby shower was more fun, just because she was there.
 
She was an amazing person, and I hope she knew how much we all love her and how MANY 
of us love her.
 
She was an inspiration to so many of us with all her months of hard work she dedicated to the Ride to Conquer Cancer each year.
She worked HARD, even when she was sick.
 
She also did an amazing job on her Children. They are beautiful, LOVING , fun, and kind. 
And Adventurous. 
Just like their Mom.
Any parent would be proud of Colleen and Derek.
 
Marie and her kids are the kind of people who try to live life to the fullest
And they should be our inspiration to not be too busy to LIVE!!!
and to keep in touch with our friends, 
and to remember how important friends and family are!!!
Some of my most fond memories are of the  Awesome Savich Family
 
 
I will forever be grateful for having known Aunt Marie
 
And I already miss her smile... and her laugh.......
 
But, like my cousin Donnah said, 
 
She is not gone,
She is in all of our hearts.....and that is HUNDREDS of hearts.
 
She is one very, very loved lady.

Steve, I have met Marie only a few times, but she always made me feel like being part of the Savich family. I will always be greatful for her advice when Aunt Ray was very sick, she has help me in so many ways throughout the unnecessary turmoils and guilt of having Aunt Ray going to live in at La Maison des Aînées.I wish, I would have had a chance to thank her once more and to tell her how much I appriciated every comfortable words and laughter during our conversations. I'm sorry that I am unable to attend the memorial service, my thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

Hi Steve, Marie will be missed by all who knew her, including Jim and I.  She had a knack of making everyone feel like an old friend, with her warmth, caring and ability to connect with everyone, when in her company.  Your family are in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.
