Dear Uncle Joe and family,

I am so sad to hear of your loss Lisa. It is always a sad time when a parent passes. I know as I lost both mine. Some Other Mother
When I was small, my mom would say, laughing, “You wouldn’t want some other mother?”   “No!” was always my answer, and we would giggle and hug each other tight. 

The Bicycle
Mom was famous for her bicycle.  It took her everywhere - to the grocery store, for coffee with friends, to the bank.  Her favourite shortcut was through the schoolyard.  As she pedalled past the classroom windows, every eye would turn to watch, and someone would always say, “Hey! There goes your mom!”

The Hoover 
Mom was a model of patience, but even she had her limits.  Her five kids were always up to something, and it could get loud.  When this happened, she would casually pull out the noisy “Hoover” vacuum and have a go at the rugs, an innocent smile on her face.  This was our cue to go outside and find some other mischief.

The Music
Her stacks of albums featured popular classical music, movie themes, and more. Singing in church was a lifelong pleasure - “like praying twice,” she would say.  As a young woman, she brought her beautiful voice to community operettas in Hamilton, including productions of H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado.  Music brought Mom joy, and her music brought joy to those around her.

The Kitchen
Mom didn’t enjoy the kitchen, and for that reason, we all became good cooks and bakers. Given full rein, we worked our way through well-worn cookbooks with curious chapters, such as High-Altitude Baking and Cooking for Crowds.  Pies, cakes, cookies, breads - we made them and Dad ate them. 

The Nana
As her kids themselves became parents, Mom happily and proudly took on the role of Nana.  She was a natural and adored and spoiled this second batch of little people.  Nana took them for muffins, danced with them and watched Sponge Bob.  She approached it all with fun and affection.   And occasional bouts of vacuuming. 

I love you, Mom.  You are a mother like no other.

We loved aunt Kathy and she always greeted us with a big smile. Her smile and her laugh are probably the two things I’ll remember most about her. She has left a legacy in her beautiful children and grandchildren and will surely be missed.

Dear Joe and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time and I know how hard it is to lose a loved one, but I also know how hard it is to watch them slipping day by day into that awful dementia world….Thank you Joe for the love and care you gave Kathy right to the very end.  Know that you did all that you could do for her and she is now at peace…her suffering is over….Stay strong.
