Joyce joins her beloved husband of 61 years, John, who passed in 2021. Also predeceased by siblings Evelyn (Ezard), Bill, Bob, Fred, Leonard and Gerald and parents William Francis (Frank) and Lily Martin. Survived by much loved youngest sister Dorothy MacAskill of Cape Breton. Loved and fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, especially Marianne Lewis of Newmarket, and best friends Verna Staples and Doris Fuchs and their families. All who knew Joyce will remember her sweet nature and generosity to others.
Born in Montreal in 1929, Joyce moved to Ontario with her family at the age of 15 and settled in Hamilton years later where she worked at the Parisian Laundry. Joyce and John met on a blind date arranged by mutual friends in 1959. Knowing immediately that he had met his life partner, John proposed on their third date and they were married 6 months later. Marilyn was born the following year. At that time, Joyce felt that all her dreams had come true. She had only ever wanted to be a wife, mother and homemaker and she fulfilled all these roles with incredible love, selflessness and commitment. When living in her home, Joyce enjoyed gardening and kept the outside of her house as immaculate as the inside.
Marilyn and Joyce shared great memories of vacations they took to England, Scotland and Ireland and when Joyce could no longer travel far, they enjoyed eating out, shopping and day trips with friends. Marilyn couldn't have asked for a better mother, companion and best friend. The void left is immense and Joyce will be loved, cherished and remain in her heart forever.
Many thanks to the nursing, Palliative Care Team and auxiliary staff at Juravinski Hospital, Unit F3 and St. Peter's Hospital, Unit 4 East for their compassionate, loving care of Joyce during her final days. Special thanks also go to friends and family who provided much needed support at this difficult time.
