Bernie was a loving husband to his wife, Brenda (nee Orchard) for 62 years. He was adored by his four children, Michael (Janet), Gary (Isabel), Steve (Danielle) and Laurie McHaffie (Rod). Bernie was a proud and much loved Papa of his 7 grandchildren; Steven, Ryan, Colin, Mara, Daniel, Siobhan and Braeden and he cherished spending time with each of them. Bernie was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Eileen MacDonnell and he is survived by his 10 younger siblings; Marie, Mary, Daniel, Kevin, Anne, Donna, Steven, Gerard, Paul and Walter and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bernie was born in New Waterford, Cape Breton Island and came to Ontario at age 17. He worked at Stelco as an electrician for over 40 years. Bernie had 2 loves; his family and hockey. He was always happiest when his whole family was close by, never wanting them to venture far off. He was a talented skater, even meeting his wife, Brenda while at the Inch Park arena. He loved watching his sons, grandsons and his favourite team, the Montreal Canadiens play. We are so happy that dad got to see the Habs beat the Leafs one last time. Bernie continued to play in the P.E.I. Oldtimers Hockey League until age 70.
He enjoyed holidays in Florida, Myrtle beach and Scotland and going “down home” to Cape Breton. Bernie fought a terrible battle with Parkinson’s disease for the last 10 years of his life, but was still making us smile to the very end. We will all miss him everyday. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
Rest In Peace Dad
