It is with great love that we mourn the death of Yvonne Jacqueline Currie, who passed away while surrounded by family, in Halifax, on February 27, 2023. A special thank-you to the staff at Evan Hall, Parkland is deserved.
Yvonne is survived by three sons: Steven (Brenda), Donald both of Halifax, Tom (Stacey) Sydney, N.S. and one daughter: Margaret Currie (Volker) Ottawa; ten grandchildren: Jacqueline (Murray), John (Lindsay), Julie (Adam), Laura, Allison, Jalal (Melodie), Beatrice, Julia, Brianna and Yvonne; and seven great-grandchildren: Harrison, Owen, Rayah, Luke, Leo, Jasper and Autumn.
She was predeceased by her oldest son David, her daughter-in-law Lynn (Donald), and an infant brother Douglas Leon who died shortly after his birth.
Born in Montreal she was the only daughter of John Horne and Marguerite Horne (Nee: Lutley). She received her education at College Street School, the Convent of the Sacred Heart and Saint Patrick’s Girls’ High School and Business School. As a child, Yvonne enjoyed riding with the Bengal Lancers. She was a strong athlete during her elementary and high school years, particularly in track and field, basketball, and tennis. She brought home the Halifax Ladies’ Singles Tennis Title in 1949. Upon graduation from business school, she was employed as a secretary with an Insurance Company until her marriage in 1949. Her husband’s employment took them to other provinces over the next several years but in 1964, after residing in Montreal for four years, they returned to Halifax where they remained. She enjoyed working for several years at Henson College, Dalhousie University and after her retirement she was active in community volunteer work. She continued to play tennis into her 80s and could often be found trying to beat her friends on the “Waeg” courts. She took great pleasure in working at Seniors’ dinners and other events held by St. Theresa’s Church where she was a faithful member for many years. She often referred to her friends at St. Theresa’s as her second family.
Yvonne was the clear matriarch of the Currie family. A gentle leader, she was the glue that kept us together despite long periods of separation and some difficult times. We all knew her as happy, positive and eager to please. Not to be outdone by anyone, she was often the funniest person in the room and never seemed to run out of laughs. She had a particularly strong bond with her adoring grandchildren, and they entertained each other with songs and stories that will live on.
