Yashwant Rai (19 January 1929 – 17 July 2018) of Clayton Park, Halifax, Nova Scotia, passed away on July 17, 2018, at the age of 90. All his family members were present at the last moment for which he expressed grateful thanks for their extraordinary service. He is survived by his children, Ashwani (Veena), Rama, Uma (Rob), and Anil (Anita); daughter-in-law, Madhu; his grandchildren, Monica (Vineet), Naveen (Phoebe), Sasha (Kwesi), Vikram (Bhuvana), Kamal, Dylan, Seth, Rohit and Ravi; his great grandchildren, Amara, Kimaya, and Kamila; and, in India, his sisters, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Sushila and his son, Rajan.
Mr. Rai migrated to Canada in May, 1967, and taught at Hebron School for three years. He then taught at Sir Robert Borden Junior High for over 11 years. Then he taught economics at Cole Harbour High until 1986 when he retired. He expressed his sincere thanks to all his colleagues at these schools.
In 1972 he helped start The Hindu Temple to serve his religion and community. In the few weeks prior to his demise, the love and affection of the Hindu community was overwhelming, and for that he expressed his gratefulness to one and all. He prayed that his family continue to lead a life dedicated to God and community. He leaves this world with gratitude to members of The Hindu Temple and his family in India and Canada.
Visitation is scheduled at J.A. Snow Funeral Home (339 Lacewood Dr) Thursday, July 19 from 3:00 to 4:00 PM followed by the service at 4:00 PM. Funeral cremation is scheduled for 10:00 AM Friday at Cole Harbour Funeral Home (1234 Cole Harbour Rd). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vedanta Ashram Society in Halifax.
