It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bill Gorman at the age of 82. Bill was born in 1940 in Antigonish NS. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Bill and Christine Gorman. He will be greatly missed by his wife Diane (nee Doyle), children Bruce and Cindy and grandchildren Ciana and Austin Dickie. He is also survived by his sister Jean Larsen (Mike), brother Patrick (Joan), sister in law Janet Hicks, her husband Bill and many nieces and nephews.
Bill had a deep and abiding passion for education. He earned his B.A. and M.A from Saint Mary’s University, his B.Ed. from Dalhousie University, and his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. His studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee happily coincided with his great love of country and western music. Along the way, he accumulated many awards for student activities and academic achievements.
Much of Bill’s career in Education was as an administrator. He served as Principal at Gorsebrook Junior High, Cunard Junior High, St. Agnes Elementary and Junior High, and South Armdale School, as well as Vice Principal at St. Catherine’s School. He was a sought after speaker on various topics of education, including issues of student assessment, motivation, and evaluation. Speaking engagements took him to various Canadian cities, and international venues. Among other professional activities, he was invited to conduct training programs for teachers throughout the Maritime provinces, and for staff at Izaac Walton Killam Hospital, Maritime Tel & Tel Company, and Nova Scotia Power Corporation.
Bill gave generously of his time and talent to various organizations. For example he was President of the Saint Mary’s University Alumni Association and Nova Scotia Tennis Association as well as serving on the Boards of Saint Mary’s University, Sport Nova Scotia, and Tennis Canada. He was a member of the Vanier Institute of the Family, and the Charitable Irish Society of Halifax, among other organizations. He was also an active and competitive participant in athletics, particularly hockey and tennis. In the summers he was a regular fixture on the tennis courts of the Waegwaltic Club in Halifax.
The family would like to thank the 5th floor staff and Dr. Barry Clarke at Saint Vincent’s Guest House for their care and attention to Bill after his stroke. Family flowers only . Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
Visitation will take place on Sunday February 5th from 4 - 7pm at Snows Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive in Halifax. The funeral will occur the following day on Monday February 6th at 11am at St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Road in Halifax followed by a reception in the church hall.
