BENNETT, WAYNE ALLAN – (78), Halifax. After a rich & rewarding life, Wayne returned to his maker on January 6, 2024. Born in Moncton in 1946, he was the son of the late William and Jeanette (Hubbard) Bennett and the adopted son of the late Reuben and Beatrice (Hubbard) Cluett/Nowlan. He graduated from St. Mary’s U. with BA, BED & MA(Ed) degrees. Wayne was a dedicated teacher and school administrator with the Halifax City School Board for over 30 years. He taught at St. Catherine’s and BC Silver/Pine Grove schools. After retiring, Wayne continued to teach by acting as a tour guide. He proudly showed cruise ship passengers around the local area as well as conducting longer bus tours around the Maritime Provinces. He used to say “Now my students are a bit older and my classroom moves”. Wayne was an avid bowler in the Halifax Teachers’ Bowling League for 50+ years. Wayne is survived by his beautiful, dear wife of 54 years, Yvonne (Dugas). He is also survived by daughter Michelle & son James, as well as grandchildren Joshua, Taylor (Kyle), Noah, Rachel and Matthew. He was predeceased by infant daughter, Denise. He is also survived by brothers David (Elaine), Larry, Tom as well as by sisters Elaine & Shirley (Ray). Wayne treasured time spent with his grandchildren. He was proud to watch their development through sports, education & by sharing many “road trips” with them. At home, he spent many relaxing hours in his workshop. He made wooden crafts (esp. “Intarsia”) for family and friends. During his lifetime, Wayne had a great love of travel. Some of his fondest memories were the adventures spent with Yvonne enjoying the wonders of our fascinating world. He believed that this was one of the best forms of education. As in the words of St. Thomas Aquinas, “Life is like a book. He who does not travel reads but one page”. Wayne always tried to maintain a positive outlook on life, so as Dr. Seuss supposedly once said, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”. Special thanks to Drs Amos, Flinn and Tilley and the wonderful staff in the Palliative Care unit of the VG hospital for taking care of him during his illness. The nurses were truly angels on earth. Thank you to Father Patrick Salah, Father Owen Connolly and Father Paul McIntosh for his spiritual care.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Wayne’s name can be made to the Cancer Society (Pancreatic Cancer), Chalice, VG Hospital (Palliative Care unit) or any charity of your choice.
