Passed away June 1, 2021, in his 97th year. He was predeceased by his wife, Teresa (Floyd), his parents Osborne and Florence Wallace, his brother Marshall, his sister Reta Lou Bailey, and his nephew Bruce Bailey. He is survived by his nieces Susan Bailey, Elizabeth Bailey, and Carol Smith, his grand-niece Margaret Smith, and his cousin Flora Dewar. He is also survived by Teresa’s siblings, Anne Lamir and Fr. Leo Floyd. Also missed by nephew Duncan Floyd and his wife Kim, their children Guthrie, Eli, and Brigid, and by niece Kathy McKenna and family.
He loved the home where he was born and lived until shortly after Teresa’s death in 2017. Perhaps a trace of the pipe smoke (later renounced) which his nieces fondly remember lingers there still. He was a real gentleman of the old school. He taught high school English for many years in Halifax. When venturing out, he was always at risk of being recognized as that QE High teacher. He was recently so pleased to meet both a staff-member and fellow resident of Parkland who were former students. Vernon was an avid golfer and enjoyed the game along with Teresa. He had a beautiful baritone voice which he shared in his choir at church, and he kept his resonant speaking voice all his life. Although he never had children of his own, he was a generous uncle and in his later years doted on his quasi grandkids, the Floyd children. He will be truly missed.
Thank you to the staff of Parkland at the Gardens for their care of Vernon.
Any donations in Vernon’s memory can be made to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission or the Canadian Cancer Society.
A private funeral service will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home on Saturday, June 12 at 11:00 AM ADT with burial to follow.
