With deeply saddened hearts, the family of Tony Hallal announces his peaceful passing at home early morning on Saturday, April 12, 2025, with his family’s love surrounding him and his devoted wife, Mary, by his side.
Tony was born in Barsa, El Koura, Lebanon, on January 6, 1954, the youngest of eleven children born to Jebrael and Saidy Hallal. Tony came to Halifax in 1974 and lived with his brother, Jamil (Ann) Hallal, for many years. Tony did not have children and centered his life around his role as an attentive and affectionate uncle to Jimmy, Leo, and Tammy, Jamil’s children. Tony took responsibility for the family since Jamil’s passing, three decades ago, and provided dedicated and reliable support, on casual days, in hard times, and during moments of joy. Shortly after, Tony formed a relationship with his wife, Mary, and provided love, care, and support to her and his stepchildren, Kristopher, Marina, and Andrew, Mary’s children.
Tony was a special and dedicated family member and friend who offered help freely to anyone in need. Tony enjoyed travelling and spending time with Mary and his family and friends. His proudest moments were when he walked Tammy down the aisle at her wedding and when he began his relationship with Mary. Tony was a loyal service provider for Halifax for decades as a taxi driver for Casino Taxi. Through his service, he was known and valued greatly by generations of passengers throughout the city. While in the city, Tony stopped at his sister-in-law, Ann’s, regularly for lunch, which were his favourite visits. Ann cherished these visits and lovingly prepared Tony’s favourite Lebanese foods as she joyfully awaited his arrival. Although Tony always attended family events, those casual yet regular visits were valued deeply and will be sorely missed, and preparing Tony’s favourite foods will never be the same without him here to enjoy them.
Tony is survived by his wife, Mary, and stepchildren, Kristopher and Marina; his brother, Maroun (Souraya), and nephew, Gabby, in Canada; his brother, Joseph (Marlaine), and children in Lebanon; his sisters, Nouhad (George) and Therese (George), and their children in Australia; and his sister-in-law, Ann, and her children, Jimmy, Leo, and Tammy of Halifax. Tony is predeceased by his parents, Jebrael and Saidy; brothers, George (Malake), Jamil (Ann), and Elias (who passed during childhood); sisters, Bahia and Jeanette (George), in Lebanon; sister, Nadia (Antoune), in Australia; sister-in-law, Marlaine, in Lebanon; and stepson, Andrew, of Halifax.
The family of Tony Hallal extends a special appreciation to the staff at Victoria General Hospital and Cobequid Community Health Centre and to the VON and palliative care nurses that provided comfort and support during Tony’s final phase of life.
