Born in Sambro, NS on May 21, 1936 to Laura (Miller) and Clarence Smith. She attended Bloomfield School. She was an employee of Simpsons for many years while growing up in Halifax.
On May 21, 1965, she married Harry Daine, who was a classmate of hers at Bloomfield School. On April 10, 1968, their daughter, Darlene was born and Shirley decided to be a stay at home mom. Darlene started highland dancing when she was about 5 years old and Shirley became very involved with the Highland Dancing Association. Shirley started knitting tartan socks for Darlene, and before she knew it she was knitting socks for many, many other highland dancers. She had requests from all over Canada, USA and even Scotland for her excellent handwork. She also started making Kilts. Shirley was well known for her knitting and handcraft skills. There are still boxes of wool at her house that she did not have time to use. She was also very active with Kiwanis after her husband, Harry, joined the Kiwanis Club of Halifax.
She was a former member of Halifax Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as secretary for quite a few years.
For the past number of years she has been compiling the family history of her mother’s and father’s families. She has filled many, many albums with photos, notes, etc. pertaining to each family. While she was working on this project, she always had a video on her computer of Daniel O’Donnell so she could listen to his music. She was an avid Danny fan.
She is survived by her husband Harry of 49 years (they would have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on May 21 this year); daughter, Darlene Helena Elizabeth (Daine) Trenholm, and her one and only grandson, who was her pride and joy, William Harry Trenholm.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9pm with funeral service on Friday, January 16 at 2pm with Rev. Vincent Ihasz officiating followed by a reception all from J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax (902-455-0531).
