BAILLIE, Robert Whitman. It is very hard to say good-bye to Bob Baillie. Perhaps that is why so few ever did. Depending on when you met him, he was either Robbie, Rob, or Bob, and you were friends for life. He was first and foremost a loving husband, father, granddad and brother. On family camping trips, or later at the cottage, he was at his happiest surrounded by family and friends.
He was proud to be from Pictou. Growing up, he competed against hockey and ball teams from across the County. But when they crossed over Mt. Thom, they always became fast friends. An active athlete until late in life, he enjoyed the fellowship of his senior skater friends.
A graduate of Mt. A, he spent 25 years as a Director with the NS Dept of Development: in Bridgewater, Truro, and Halifax. His last posting was as the Trade Representative in Boston, a role that brought him much personal and professional satisfaction. For Bob, work was always an opportunity to meet people and make new friends, which was the secret to his success.
Bob had an enormous sense of humour, He could tease with the best of them, but it was never hurtful. He debated current events vigorously, but it was never personal. He competed in many sports, but was always gracious, win or lose. For these reasons and more, he made a unique connection with everyone he met. Later in life, as dementia slowly set in, he never lost that sense of humour or pleasure in the company of others. He faced his illness with courage and dignity.
Bob died peacefully on January 13, 2016, age 77 years with his family by his side, completing a lifetime full of love, kindness, generosity and fun. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Bev (Hubley), by his 2 children Jamie (Sandra Crowell) and Jackie Baillie, by his grandchildren Ryan and Colin Wamboldt, and Alexandra and Hannah Baillie. He is also survived by his sisters, Sheila (Nick Scaravelli), Karen (Norm MacLeod), and brother Ian, plus many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents James Hamilton and Winifred (Whitman) Baillie of Pictou.
