Age 76, of Halifax, passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 in the Halifax Infirmary, surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis was born in Gypsum Mines, Hants County and raised in Sheet Harbour, Clementsport, Caledonia and Bear River, Nova Scotia. She was the eldest daughter of the late Morris and Caroline (McClair) Cox.
She obtained a Business Diploma from St. Patrick’s Business College in Digby before moving to Halifax in 1959. She worked as an administrative assistant with the Bank of Nova Scotia and then the Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech Clinic until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of the Hillsburgh United Church in Bear River. Phyllis volunteered her time with the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society and supported countless other community organizations.
Phyllis was a loyal and loving daughter, sister and aunt, who cared deeply about her family and close friends and always put the needs and well-being of others first. She was an avid bridge player and always looked forward to “bridge nights,” especially Saturday evenings, with her sister Marie and friends at Heatherwood Court. She was a long-time fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and always enjoyed watching curling, especially when her favourite skips Pat Ryan and Kevin Martin were on the ice. She had a keen interest in politics and never missed an opportunity to debate current events with her nephew Nick.
Phyllis is survived by her sister, and best friend, Marie; brothers, Henry (Beverley), Lower Sackville and Eric (Linda), Bear River; nephews, Ryan, Lower Sackville; Nick (Anne), Halifax; Adrian (Amanda), Sheet Harbour; and her niece, Shelley (David Forrest), Lower Sackville.
Visitation will be held Monday, September 26, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Cruikshank's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27th, also at Cruikshank's Funeral Home, Windsor Street with Rev. Russ Daye officiating.
Donations in memory of Phyllis may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society – Nova Scotia Division.
