McLaughlin, Philip Alan-Died November 5, 2023 at the Halifax Infirmary. Born May 17, 1937, Moncton, N.B. He was the youngest son of the late W.R. (Ron) McLaughlin and Isobel McLaughlin. He is survived by his wife Shirley McLaughlin, son Christopher McLaughlin (Debbie), Mississauga, Ont., daughter Kerry McLaughlin, Toronto, Ont., and his brother Larry of Moncton. Predeceased by brothers Dick, and Wayne of Moncton.
Phil began his long career with the Federal Government, Environment Canada Weather Service in Halifax, N.S. Over the years, Phil worked at a number of weather offices, including his Halifax posting, Goose Bay, N.L., and Saint John, N.B. In 1968 he joined the teaching staff of Environment Canada, Ottawa where he taught meteorology for ten years, later moving with the new weather school to Cornwall, Ont. His last posting was to London, Ont., where he was manager of the London Airport Weather Office. While in London, Phil began his second career as a T.V. Meteorologist for CFPL-TV for 10 years. Upon retirement from Environment Canada, Phil and his wife moved back to Halifax, N.S. where he continued his TV work with CTV and Global televison as an on air meteorologist, part-time. Phil also shared the weather desk with "Weather by Day", at Saltwire newspapers.
Phil was an avid cyclist and enjoyed nothing better than going off on a long cycle. He especially enjoyed being able to do this during all his winter retreats to Florida over 13 winters while enjoying his winter getaway at Dunedin, Florida. Phil gained a reputation as Mr. Handyman due to his ability to fix or repair just about anything and it did not take long for people to ask him for help.
Cremation has taken place. Celebration of Life to be held later. Donations can be made to Halifax Metro Care and Share and/or Canadian Cancer Society in Phil's memory.
