On April 7, 2021 the world lost a spectacular nurse, mother, step mother, wife and friend. Patti Kydd lost her 3 year battle with cancer but remained a fighter until the end. Never one to give up, she went through three different forms of treatment but unfortunately, the disease took her from us just shy of her 79th birthday.
Patti will be deeply missed by her husband and soul mate Bill Kydd. Second marriages for both, the path to find each other may have been a bit crazy, but they were meant to be together. Their partnership and love is one to be envied.
Patti was a mother and best friend to Shona Waddell. She was always there to listen and offer guiding words of wisdom, never judge and just laugh with. Patti visited Calgary frequently to see her daughter and grandchildren. Shona and Patti would talk, cook, shop and shop and shop... Patti’s son, Cam Waddell made her so proud of everything he has accomplished. Patti supported Cam in every decision he made, from changing careers and going back to school to his time in Afghanistan with the military. Visits in Montreal with Cam were the highlight of many summers for Patti and Bill.
David Kydd, Michael Kydd and Jennifer Kydd came into Patti’s life long before she became their step mother. Patti watched all three grow into phenomenal, successful and happy adults. Patti never thought of them as step children but as part of her wonderful, eclectic and sometimes insane family. She offered parental advice often, but was never offended if someone chose their own path. Patti loved to talk medicine with David and often commented on how compassionate he was with his patients, a rare commodity for a doctor she said. Michael challenged Patti with his quick wit and intelligence and this kept her energized when they had discussions. Patti loved to see Mike as a father and how it fulfilled him. Patti loved Jennifer’s independence and easy going nature. When Jennifer became an actress, Patti bragged to everyone she knew. When Jennifer left acting to pursue interior design, Patti was equally as impressed with how it seemed a natural fit for Jennifer.
Patti’s greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren. She was the best at creating scavenger hunts with real buried pirate chests, sewing superhero capes, puppet theatres, PJ’s and most recently face masks for all the grandchildren. She loved visiting all her grandkids and spending very special time with all of them. She created imaginary elf houseguests, helped Bill pull magic chocolate coins from the grandkids ears, played video games and even entered the Instagram world so she could follow what her grandchildren were up to.
Patti loved to talk to grandson Josh about being a quarterback and goalie and really loved watching hm play. Most recently, Patti enjoyed talking politics to Josh even though they had very different political beliefs.
Patti was very proud of grandson Trevor’s love for animals and had such fun when Trevor came to Halifax to “work” for Grandma and Grandad in the summers.
Grandson Connor’s dedication to school was something Patti bragged about to others and she was looking forward to getting updates on Connor’s University life at McMaster this year.
Patti loved grand daughter Sophia’s crazy sense of humour and outgoing personality. She loved to hear about Sophia’s swimming and other adventures every summer when she and Bill would visit in Moncton.
Patti had great fun making grand daughter Maria pink princess clothes and discussing fashion with her. Patti loved Maria’s huge heart, her capacity for acceptance and inclusion and her confidence. She looked forward to seeing where Maria’s ambitions to become an actress led her.
The youngest grand children, Marlowe and Rhys kept Patti young, playing games with them, babysitting and just having fun. She always had something exciting planned for them when they visited and always had stories of their escapades to share. She loved Marlowe’s inquisitive nature and always tried to challenge him with trips to the science centre and imaginative experiments. She adored Rhys’s red curls, shy cautiousness and open heart.
Patti’s love also extended to her sons and daughter in laws. She treated Kelly Kydd, Doug Luce, Thomas Matheson and Patsy Osmond as she did her own. Patti enjoyed long talks with Doug, baking his favourite treats and keeping him busy by giving him small projects to do around the house. Patti enjoyed listening to Thomas play his music and loved watching him be an amazing father with his children. Patti always looked forward to seeing Patsy and catching up, talking about the cats and offering her words of wisdom for raising daughters.
Patti also had numerous friends, too numerous to name them all. Her friends were dear and close to her. Patti would give her time, her ear or her sewing skills to any friends in need. She loved playing bridge with them, vacationing to exotic destinations, drinking good wine and eating good food. Usually prepared by Patti!
Patti, Mom, Grandma Patti, Grammie Patti, you touched so many lives in such a positive way, you will never be forgotten and you will always be loved.
Arrangements for cremation have taken place. There will be a private celebration of Patti's life at a later date. To leave an online condolence please visit: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
