Opal, often known by family members as “Dubby”, was born in Half Island Cove, Guysborough County. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Beryl (Hendsbee) Dobson. She is predeceased by her husband, Abram Goodwin Courtney, and her brothers Calvin “Dobbie” Dobson and Milton Dobson.
Those who knew and loved Opal, will remember that what made her happiest in life was being surrounded by family and friends. She loved to welcome people into her home, fill their bellies with her wonderful cooked meals, such as her famous fish cakes, baked beans, and tea biscuits, and to fill the room with laughter. No one ever left her house hungry or without a warm smile on their face. Opal also loved baking and making crafts. She was actively involved in her church for many years and her highly sought after homemade bread, rolls, pies, and cookies were sold within minutes of hitting the bake table.
Opal will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Mary Donovan (Mark), Susan Gingras (Louis) and Gail Morton (Dustin); grandchildren, James Gingras, Duresa Forsberg (Morton), Sean Morton, Dustin Morton and Ashley Morton; and great grandchildren Abel, Seth, Gage, Payton and Wyatt.
The family will be forever grateful to the amazing staff of 7-Centre, Northwood Halifax Campus, for the loving, compassionate, and quality care provided to Opal.
In keeping with Opal’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral service to remember her life will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 11:00 a.m. at Saint Margaret of Scotland Church, Halifax. An informal gathering with coffee/tea and refreshments will be held in the Church Hall prior to the service at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Northwood Foundation.
