In Loving Memory of Nancy (Geldert) MacDonald
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nancy MacDonald on November 23rd, 2023. Nancy, a cherished wife, devoted mother, adored sister, and beloved friend and community member, left an indelible mark on the lives she touched. Born on August 10th, 1967, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Nancy's journey through life was one marked by love, passion, and an unwavering commitment to family.
Nancy's early years were filled with the joy of summers spent on the waters of Lunenburg, sailing with friends and family. Her love for the ocean became a defining theme in her life, shaping her into the warm, gentle soul that so many came to know and love.
A graduate of Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and Vancouver Community College with a diploma in Journalism, Nancy began her professional journey at MT&T, where she cultivated lasting friendships. Her career path then led her to the world of advertising and marketing, where her creativity and passion were present in every project she undertook.
However, it was in the venture of running and owning the Coburg Coffee House alongside her husband Andrew that Nancy found her true calling. Her aspiration was to create a haven, a warm and welcoming space for the community to gather. Nancy poured her heart and soul into every cup of coffee, bowl of soup, and sandwich served, leaving an indelible mark on all who entered.
Beyond her professional achievements, Nancy was a pillar of her community. Involved in various initiatives, she served as the special events coordinator for the Bluenose Marathon, dedicated eight years to the Waegwoltic Club as a board member and president, and cycled in the Ride for Cancer, championing causes close to her heart. Nancy was a beacon of positivity, lifting those around her at every opportunity.
Nancy's partnership with Andrew was a testament to true love and collaboration. As business partners, life partners, and loving parents to their children, Kate and Ben, Nancy and Andrew exemplified the essence of a meaningful and enduring connection.
Her gentle nature, coupled with an unwavering commitment to kindness, influenced not only her family but also the extended community. Nancy's happiest moments were spent at her cherished cottage in Prince Edward Island, surrounded by family and friends. Whether playing on Cousin's Shore Beach or cruising the Southwest river on her boat, Nancy found joy in the simple pleasures of life.
Despite her many roles, Nancy's favorite job of all was being a mom. Her famous chocolate chip cookies and delicious family meals were a testament to her belief that dinner time was an opportunity for loved ones to connect and share in the warmth of each other's company.
Nancy's extensive circle of friends was a source of strength and support, especially during the challenges of the past few years. Her journey was marked by incredible love, courage, grace, and bravery, making her the toughest cookie around and demonstrating resilience that inspired all who knew her. Her zest for life and sense of adventure shone brightly, even in the face of adversity. During a stage of remission, Nancy, Andrew, and their close friends embarked on a sailing adventure around the British Virgin Islands, embracing every precious moment.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff of 5A at the Victoria General Hospital, the staff at the Halifax Cancer Center at the Dickson Building, Dr. Stephanie Scott, Dr. Jessica Pinkham, Dr. Rachelle Findley, and Dr. Lana Saciragic for their kindness and compassion during Nancy's final days.
Nancy is survived by her loving husband, Andrew, children Kate and Ben, sister Beth Girard (Ron, Zoe and Eva), and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and vast extended family members.
In celebration of Nancy's life, a memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Church, 6036 Coburg Rd, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Monday, December 4th at 11 am. Reception to follow at the Waegwoltic Club at 6549 Coburg Rd, from 2-5 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ovarian Cancer Canada or the QE2 Foundation in Nancy's honor.
May Nancy’s spirit sail on, forever anchored in the hearts of those she touched. She will be deeply missed.
