Myrtle Downey (Queenie) of Whites Lake, Nova Scotia was born in North Preston, NS on January 1, 1943 to The Late Francis Downey Sr and Ida Downey (Smith). Myrtle passed away on February 18,2022 at home peacefully with her niece Myra at her bedside.
Myrtle Downey was a member of Saint Thomas Baptist Church, but when Myrtle transitioned back home to Nova Scotia she resided in Halifax and attended Cornwallis Street Church. Myrtle lived many years in Montreal for many and worked as a housekeeper in the Jewish homes for many years. While living in Montreal, she opened her door to everyone who was passing through where ever they were traveling to. Myrtle would always provide you with a good meal, drinks, a place of shelter, lots of conversation and a good time.
Myrtle Downey was a praying woman who loved the Lord and always spoke about becoming a minister one day. Whenever she heard of a family member or friend being hospitalized, Myrtle would get on the bus to visit them and pray with them. Myrtle came from a large family of siblings and they loved each other and were very closely knitted, but her pride and joy was her son Wade Reggie Downey as Myrtle would say. Myrtle had a special relationship with her niece Myra who she came to live with when she was facing a difficult time in her life. She resided with her niece Myra up until her passing. Myrtle also, had a very special relationship with her younger brother Flemming which she called him Flippin. Myrtle was a very sophisticated women but not with arrogance and when she entered into the room all eyes were on her. Myrtle was very out spoken in all things and voiced her opinion without hesitation and was very particular of her surroundings. She was a very strong-willed woman.
Myrtle enjoyed cooking; She enjoyed boxing around with friends and family. She also, enjoyed watching wrestling, Sandford & Son, boxing, and Bonanza. Myrtle loved listening to gospel music. Back in the day Myrtle loved to bet on the horses, play poker with friends and family, play bingo, and loved to go out to the hottest dance clubs and have a good time.
Myrtle Downey is survived by her son Wade, niece Myra (Stewart), sisters; Burley and Mildred, brothers; Flemming Sr. (Violet), Albert (Patricia), Conrad (Claudia), Ivan Willis Sr.(Muriel);Special Grand daughter- Tanika Kirts; Several grand children and great grand children; Godchildren, Flemming Jr. (Nicole), Patricia (Austin), Lazlo Maros, Scott, Gerry (Muriel), Carrie, Minus(Chad) and Mandrez; Special Sisters, Violet Downey and Margaret Downey; Special Friends, Lavon Simmonds, Viola Dixon, Laura Beals (Lala), Alice Kirts, Delma Cain, Rolanda Beals.
Myrtle Downey was predeceased by brothers; Francis Jr., Angus, Perry and Clyde, sisters; Stella, Margaret, Clara, Oneita, Adeline, Janie, Lavon and Mae Simmonds.
Myrtle Downey will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Private Viewing will be held at J.A Snow Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Dr, Halifax, NS on Friday, February 25,2022 from 3-5pm by invitation only. Private Family burial will be held at a later date.
