On behalf of Halifax Minor Baseball Association, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of a person many of us affectionately knew as "Baseball Dave." 
Although we will miss seeing him at the ball diamonds during summer months, we know his spirit will live on.

While I did not know him, his love of walking, sports and city neighborhoods allows me to picture him. An SMU friend since the sixties Fr.Owen Connelly gave an accurate description of his life last Saturday Jan.2 after the late afternoon service.The family burial at the Sackville cemetery in spring should be a warm happy celebration of the gifts he gave to so many, and who will stand with you at a time of transition,

David was a great neighbour and an interesting person. I had several chats with him over the past few years. My favourite memory was in January, 1992.
My father had passed away and David knocked on our front door (corner of Preston and Cedar) and offered a condolence card. It read "Love ,like a beautiful song, lingers on after the last note is played". My father was a musician and this sentiment resonated with us. I had a friend who is a graphic artist put it in a format that we could display, on a music stand, at the funeral home visitation.

David (Joe-Joe), will certainly be missed, not only by the old neighbourhood gang, but by anyone who ever ran a base in Halifax. RIP, David.

To Dave's niece and nephew:

Hello: My name is Tom Ross (I believe you know my brother Jim, through his association with Dave. I wish to offer my condolences with David's passing. We grew up on Garden St. in the '50s-60s and our backyard bordered the Caryi's yard. Consequently, David and I had many conversations over the fence. He was about 8 years older, but I never perceived any age difference, he was just Dave. 
Looking back, I think Dave gave all of us in the neighbourhood an early lesson in what is now called "inclusion." Yes, he had coordination difficulties but this never stopped him from participation or prevented us from having him as part of the neighbourhood gang that played sports on the street, at the schoolyard or at the Quoit Field. In adult years, I became a physiotherapist and often thought of how Dave got on with his life, never asking anything or complaining.
He always supported me in my baseball days in Halifax. If I had a dollar for every time Dave and I walked up to the Forum on Windsor St.  ...
A keen mind, wonderful memory, and great,dry sense of humour.
We would annually get a Christmas card from him, I missed not getting it this year as our season was never complete until we got his card, one of my last ties to my childhood neighbourhood.
I estimate it has been 15 years since I saw him last, certainly long before he moved from Cedar St. We have been living in Middleton for more than 30 years and I have retired from Soldiers' Memorial Hospital.
Unfortunately, I'll be flying to Toronto during the time of the service but Dave (and both of you) will be in my prayers and thoughts at that time. I know my brother Jim plans to attend.
Once again, my sympathies in the loss of your uncle. He was one of a kind, and I'll miss him.

The first time I met Dave was in the mid 80's. It was the beginning of a blinding snowstorm. Dave had just watched my hockey game. I offered him a drive and was surprised that he knew me as a hockey player, ball player, referee and umpire. There are hundreds of people like me, who let Dave in, only to experience a loyal fan and a friend who intelligently loved sports. The ball fields and hockey arenas in metro will miss this kind genuine soul.

Our family's sincerest condolences on the loss of your Uncle Dave. I remember him fondly, and he was particularly special to my youngest brother Mathieu, who he watched and followed for years through his amateur sports years.

Saddened to read of the passing of Baseball Dave.We only knew Dave for the few years our son was involved with Halifax Minor Baseball. Dave's enthusiasm to follow the baseball teams was impressive.He thought nothing of walking over the bridge from Halifax to South Dartmouth to watch a game, he knew the boys by name and could comment on their improvement from year to year. If Halifax Rec. recognizes a fan for dedication & support (if not, they should) Baseball Dave gets our vote. Thank you Dave .     the parents of Mike Swim

Dave was a wonderful person. He was always at the Conrose field watching the baseball games.God bless Dave. Sincere sympathy from the Fellows Family.

The Roe family lived next door to the Caryis on Cedar Street for many years. My uncle, D B Roe, spoke often with David and I remember seeing David walking the length and breadth of Halifax. He was always so pleasant and friendly. May he rest in peace.

I will miss chatting with Dave in and around the apartment building where we both lived. Rest in peace, Dave. God bless you.

I didn't know Dave but when I worked as a Police Officer on Patrol I remember seeing him at sporting events and just walking on the street. God Bless, Rest in Peace.

Dave was a gentle & kind soul....a family friend. The Cairns family sends deepest sympathy.

I grew up with David (Joe) playing ball and hockey in the "Quoit Yard".  We remained in contact throughout our lives.  I will miss him and his insights.

Very sorry for your loss. David was very kind to all of us in the Cedar Street area growing up as he watched and supported our sports. May he rest in peace.

I have fond memories of our neighbourhood pick-up baseball games at St Thomas Aquinas school field as a youngster. David had a beautiful leather first baseman's glove which he always let the opposition team members, including me, use. Great memories of a nice guy!

Joanne and Steven, I am very Sorry for the loss of your Uncle Dave. He was a very sweet and kind man.
