It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our precious mother, Mary (DOROTHY) Shannon age 92 of Halifax. Mom passed away peacefully on August 19, 2020 at Arborstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, NS. She was given her final sacrament of the sick on August 16, 2020 by Reverend Irek Bem.
She was born in West Arichat, Cape Breton. She was the daughter of the late Margaret (Forgeron) LeBlanc and John Baptiste Leblanc. Mom was a dedicated member of Saint Mary’s Basilica since moving to Halifax, NS in 1943. She became a Eucharistic Minister in 1974 and was an active member of the Children of Mary where she lead the daily rosary in the Marian Chapel at Saint Mary’s Basilica until the age 88. Mom made numerous trips to Saint- Anne- de- Beaupré, loved her annual pilgrimages to Monastery, and her trip of a lifetime was in 1989 when she visited the Apparition Hill in Medugorje, Yugoslavia. She enjoyed her daily walks to Saint Mary’s Basilica and Point Pleasant Park, she loved reading, knitting, playing the spoons and fiddle, going out for lunch and shopping. Mom had many recipes that were well loved by her family, including, meat pie, blueberry pie, homemade bread and galletes (look it up). Mom loved to cook for her family and enjoyed any time with her children and grandchildren.
She was a humble, gentle, prayerful lady respected by all. She is survived by daughter Cindy (Rick) Melkert, sons Martin (Kate) Shannon, Donald Shannon, and Lindsay (Jennifer) Shannon, six grandchildren Stephen Melkert, Sarah (Brock) Hopkins, Ashley (Adam) Fleiger, Samuel and Olivia Shannon and Lauren Shannon. She was anxiously awaiting the arrival of her two great granddaughters. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Shannon, sisters Jeanette Mellish and Leda Leblanc, brother William and Clifford LeBlanc and Harry in infancy. She will be deeply missed. A special thank you to the caring staff of the fourth floor at Arborstone Enhanced Care who were involved in mom’s care plan for the past four and a half years. They went above and beyond, and for that we are eternally grateful!
