CODY, Mary Margaret – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sister, aunt and great aunt, Mary Margaret Cody. Surrounded by her loving family, Mary lost her battle with cancer at the age of 61, on Friday, March 9th, 2012. Born on May 27th, 1950, in Sydney, NS Mary was the fourth daughter of the late Kevin and Mary Cody. Mary travelled her final journey with prayer, hope, humour and dignity. Mary attended Mount St. Vincent University to receive her teaching degree. She was a born teacher and was loved by all her students and colleagues. She taught in Newfoundland in Twillingate with her lifelong friend, Corrine O’ Reilly, and returned to Halifax to continue her teaching career. Mary cared for her students as if they were her own children. She had exuberance for life and a keen sense of adventure. She enjoyed a good joke, was always laughing and making people laugh. Infusing humour into everyday events was a way of life for Mary. During her teaching career, she was given an opportunity to be a host for several Japanese ladies wanting to learn English. Visiting Japan was a goal for her and she was able to make this dream come true last spring. It was a trip of a lifetime for Mary. She was an avid hockey fan attending her nephews’ games on a regular basis. Mary was Sidney Crosby’s No. 1 fan and also rooted for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The revival of St. Patrick’s Church was near and dear to her heart, attending many of their concerts as she supported the events to raise money for this worthy cause. All things Irish had a special place in Mary’s heart culminating on a dream to visit the Emerald Isle. She treasured her pet cats throughout the years. Upon retirement, Mary delighted in bowling with her friends. Having the time to see the world through many cruises became a passion for Mary, with her dear friend, Mona Smith. Mary was a member of St. Vincent De Paul’s Church. She will truly be missed by her family and friends….if friends were measured in money, Mary would have been a billionaire. Surviving family members include: Therese (Bob) MacNeill, Eileen Cody, Noreen (Frank) Doyle, Kevin (Donalda) Cody, Cathy (Mike) McNamara, Tom (Carol) Cody, Anne (Kevin) Crowell, sister-in-law Marcia Cody; nieces and nephews Heather, Rob, John-Paul, Peter, Jamie, Kevin, Cathy, John, Frankie, Neal, Duncan, Alana, Suzie, Vanessa, Frankie, Cody, Troy, Mark, Jeff, Connor and Shayla; Mary was GAM, Great Aunt Mary to: Robbie, Maddy, Abby, Sofia, Patrick, Makayla, Alexander, Olivia, Scarlett and Andre.
