We are heartbroken to share the news of the loss of our much-loved mother, nana, great nana, sister, cousin and friend, Marlene. Mom passed away Thursday, June 9th surrounded by family in Halifax Hospice.
Born on August 15, 1936 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, mom was the daughter of Anna (Duffey) and Hedley Hope. In addition to her parents, mom was predeceased by her infant son Michael, husband Jerry, brother Bernard and infant great grandchildren Riley and April.
Survived by daughters Debbie, Janice (Gerard); son Michael; sister Barbara (Bernie); grandchildren Douglas (Jenny Lynn), Jennifer (Cale), Dane (Leah), Haley (Nic), Sarah, Kathleen (Jason); great grandchildren Brayden, Hartlen, Alice and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom graduated from the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing in 1957 and worked at various hospitals across Canada during dad’s navy postings. Upon returning to Halifax, mom worked at the Halifax Infirmary where she eventually became Head Nurse of 4A (Medicine). She was an original member of the team who brought The Palliative Care Initiative to Nova Scotia and finally retired as an Assistant Director of Nursing in 1992. Mom was extremely proud of her long career as a nurse and up until the time of her passing she still interacted with members of the health care team to discuss health issues whenever she was in their presence and never stopped being a caregiver to others.
Everyone who knew mom knows how passionate and strong she felt about her faith. Mom’s ultimate trip was her Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2017. She was a member of the CWL for 50 yrs and was active in the Cursillo Movement, Days of Enrichment, Alpha, and many prayer and rosary groups, Parish Council, Life Group etc.
Mom loved a good game of bridge with her many friends and was in the midst of learning how to play crib over the recent months.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Halifax Infirmary; good friend Marion who was always there for both mom and us over the years. We would also like to thank Halifax Hospice for keeping mom comfortable in her final days.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 4th, 5-8pm, Snow’s Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive. Funeral Mass to be held on Tuesday, July 5th at 12:15pm, Saint Benedict Church, 45 Radcliffe Dr, Halifax, NS.
In lieu of flowers donations can be given to Halifax Hospice or a charity of your choice.
