We are heartbroken to share the sudden passing of our wife, mother and grandmother, Marion Ruth “Mom Mom” Baxter on August 13, 2022. Mom at 88 and a half (the ½ was important!), had a wicked sense of humour and a zest for life that belied her age. She was the youngest daughter of the late Herbert and Edith (MacMaster) MacDonald. She was born in Hardwicke, Northumberland Co., N.B. Mom moved to Moncton at the age of 8 and graduated from Moncton High School. She then went on to graduate as an R.N. from the School of Nursing at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. After graduation she served as a Lt. Nursing Sister with the Canadian Army as well as a nurse at the Moncton Hospital. Mom married her high school sweetheart on September 3, 1960, and moved to Halifax where she worked with the V.O.N. as a visiting nurse. She put her nursing career on hold for several years while raising her family, returning part-time as a Student Health Nurse at Mount St. Vincent University in the early 1970’s, before returning full-time at the Veteran’s Memorial Building, QEII Heath Sciences Centre in Halifax before retiring in 1999. She was a founding member of the Friends of the Halifax V.O.N. and a former member of the Junior League of Halifax. She was devoted to her family, her friends, her church, and the causes she cared about. She loved spending time with her family at the cottage in Cape Brule, Shediac, N.B. and had just recently returned to Halifax after spending the month of July there.
Surviving is her husband Charles R. Baxter Jr., and her daughters Anne (David Van Scoyk), Peggy, and Alana (John Pettigrew), son Richard (Wendy), grand-daughters Haley Tibbetts, Cameron MacKinnon, Lauryn Pettigrew, Reagan Pettigrew and grandsons Ben and Colby Baxter. Mom was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Shirley, Jean, Connie, and Gwen as well as her brothers Blair and Bliss. She was thrilled to have recently found a nephew in England and to have had the opportunity to meet him and his family this summer.
The family will receive visitors from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Friday, August 19, 2022, at Bethany United Church, 7171 Clinton Ave., Halifax. Funeral service Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 1:00 pm at Bethany United Church. Donations in Marion’s memory may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses (V.O.N.) or charity of your choice.
