Born in Windsor, NS she was the daughter of the late Marjorie Kinsman Campbell Wright and the late Ian Campbell. She was later adopted by her aunt and uncle, the late Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Johnson, Wolfville. She received her education in Wolfville Schools, Acadia University (Sec. Sc., BA Hist), St. Mary’s University (BA Classics), Victoria General Hospital (RN), and Winnipeg General Hospital and University of Manitoba (Post Grad OR, Teaching and Supervision)
She served as a volunteer for a number of charities, as well as the Nova Scotia Museum for ten years, the IWK Health Science Centre for fifteen years, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and Pier 21. She taught typing to underachieving elementary school children and participated in the Writers in Schools program for the Writers Federation of Nova Scotia. She researched historical material and read, illustrated and edited manuscripts for Petheric Press Ltd. And under the pseudonym Mary Eliza Franklyn, she was the author and illustrator of a series of magazine articles and four books, including a national award winning children’s cookbook, Pepper Makes Me Sneeze. She continued to pursue her long time hobby in painting, especially cherishing her time with the Art Bethany Group. She enjoyed reading, writing, gardening and especially her children. She was a devoted wife and mother.
Mrs. McCurdy is predeceased by her husband, W.H. (Bill) McCurdy, her twin brother, David Campbell; sister-in-law, Patricia McCurdy Hayward, Aunt Pauline Kinsman., and, cousin George Kinsman
She is survived by son, Andrew; granddaughter, Amelia, Yarmouth; daughter, Anna, Lunenburg; sister, Marjorie (Donald Ross), Halifax, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and a visitation will be held on Friday September 6, 2024 from 4-7pm in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the SPCA or a charity of choice. Thank you to the staff on the third floor of Melville Gardens for their care.
