Legere, Margaret Mary, age 95, died peacefully at home in Halifax on Sunday March 24, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Elizabeth Cummings of Halifax. After graduating from Mount St. Vincent and Dalhousie University, Margaret worked for several years as a teacher at Oxford Street School. In 1942 she joined the Public Service Commission of Canada, where she first worked for the Meteorological Service, then for Family Allowances, and finally for the Commission itself where she served for many years, retiring in 1978 as Assistant Regional Director here in Halifax. Among her responsibilities with the PSC was a significant administrative role in St. John's in connection with Newfoundland's entry into Confederation in 1949. In 1967 she was presented with the Centennial Medal for diligence in service to Canada. In 1977, she was honored with a special retirement award for long and meritorious service with the PSC, the award being presented by the Lieutenant Governor in a ceremony at Government House. Margaret was active in volunteer work over many years, including service to disabled patients at the Veterans Memorial Hospital, and work with the Alzheimer's Society. She is survived by her brother Donald Cummings, step children Ronald Legere and Sharon Bowen, daughter-in-law Margie Legere, and grandsons Tony and Danny Legere. She was predeceased by her husband Gerald, and sisters Barbara and Joan Cummings and Ruth Sinnema. Margaret's family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation for the loving and loyal service provided to her during her declining years by care workers Geraldine Parsons, Marilyn Pearce, Laura MacDonald, and Margaret Truen. Friends will be received at Cruikshank's funeral home on Windsor Street on Monday April 1st between the hours of 3:30 pm and 8:00 pm. Funeral service will take place at 10:30 am Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas church on Tuesday morning April 2nd, and burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
