Lorraine Simon, 82, of Halifax passed away peacefully on April 24, 2015 surrounded by her family. Born on May 17, 1932, she is the daughter of the late Lawrence Joseph and Mary Margaret (Rankin) Young.
Over her lifetime, Lorraine was an avid reader, bridge player and traveller. She loved gardening and was a major fan of tennis and curling. Her greatest joy was her family and she loved having lots of people sharing meals and laughter together. When grandchildren started to arrive, Lorraine experienced a whole new level of joy in caring for them and loving them. She knitted hundreds of miles of yarn into sweaters, hats and mittens to keep her grandchildren cozy.
Lorraine was a woman of great faith. She was an active member of the Catholic Women’s League and served as the President at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish.
Lorraine is survived by George, her loving husband of over sixty years; her four daughters – Paula (Robert Chisholm), Dena, Katherine (Paul Beaudette) and Kimberley (Laurie Power). Although she was predeceased by her first grandchild, Simon Chisholm, she was blessed with six more grandchildren – Jessie Chisholm, Benjamin and Clare (Beaudette) Simon, and Alexander, Matthew and Liam Power. She is also survived by her sister Colette Walker; her brothers Lawrence Young (Marie) and Peter Young (Diane); and many nieces and nephews.
Lorraine was predeceased by her sister Anna Brennan and brothers John and Harold Young.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday April 28 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive. The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday April 29 at 2:00 pm at St. John the Baptist Church on Purcell’s Cove Road. Burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to World Vision or to the charity of your choice.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of Arborstone for the extraordinary care they gave Lorraine in her final days and for the kindness and compassion they showed to her loved ones.
Lorraine will be forever in the hearts of family and friends. And although her loss is a source of sorrow, her life is a source of celebration.
