Lorne Allan (Manny) Gray, 85 of Halifax passed away suddenly at the Halifax Infirmary, QEII Site on June 23, 2014. Born in Halifax on February 15, 1929, he was the son of the late Herbert and Mary Alice (Kane) Gray.
Daddy was a member of Saint Thomas Baptist Church, North Preston, and a member of the Men’s Brotherhood. Daddy was quiet in his ways but as you talked with him, he could hold a conversation. He was the first person of color to be employed at Moirs Ltd on Argyle St in Halifax for over 30 plus years and in 1976 relocated in Dartmouth.
He was survived by daughters, Marilyn (Ernest) Fraser, Halifax, Sharon (Bruce) Barton, Edmonton AB, Lorna (Robert) Smith, Toronto, ON, Brenda (Gary) Beals, Cherrybrook, Elizabeth (George) Grant, Donalda Gray, Charmaine Wynn, all of Halifax, Kimberly (Drew) Fraser, Ottawa, ON, Ann (Donald) Brown, Halifax; sons, Robert Gray, Halifax, Richard (Eleanor) Gray, North Preston, Roger (Fabiola) Beals, Calgary, AB; sister, Leona Cain, Halifax; 54 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Lydia Downey Gray, daughters Lorna May Downey and Loretta May Beals; son, Roger Allan, granddaughter, Shanaela MacDonald ; great grandson Deangelo Beals; sister, Eva Grouse; maternal grandparents Henry and Carrie (Slawter) Kane.
Visitation will be held Sunday, June 29, 2014 from 2-4, 7-9 pm in Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. Funeral Service to be held at 1:00pm Monday, June 30, 2014 in Saint Thomas Baptist Church, North Preston with Rev. Wallace Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Downey Road Cemetery, North Preston. In Daddy’s memory, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Saint Thomas Baptist Church Building Fund.
