Lillian “Camilla” Avery, age 85 of Halifax, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Drummond Hall, Parkland, Halifax. Beloved wife of the late John “Reginald” Avery, she was a gentle, kind and thoughtful spirit devoted to her family.
Camilla was born in Larry’s River, Nova Scotia to the late Allan and Bertha Pellerin. She graduated in 1950 from Normal College in Truro, NS with her teacher’s diploma following which she taught at a two-room schoolhouse in Larry’s River for three years. Camilla continued her education at Dalhousie University in the summer of 1952, obtaining her provincial teacher’s license. She moved to Halifax in 1953 and started working for the Federal Civil Service (army) as an Office Clerk until 1955 when she married the love of her life.
Camilla was a longtime and active member of the CWL, serving 40 years in various council positions including VP in St Stephens Council for three years. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends at St Mother Teresa of Kolkata , rummoli with her friends at the Gladstone, evening scrabble and crib games with her sisters and family and she loved taking trips with her sisters to Larry’s River and Cape Breton. She was very proud of her Acadian Heritage and had a keen interest in genealogy.
Camilla is survived by her daughters, Estelle (Bill) MacMaster, Dartmouth NS, Jean (Alphonse) Pitts, New Glasgow NS, Lynn (Daren) Moulstone, Upper Tantallon NS; sons, Doug (Geri) Avery, Halifax NS and Gerard (Tracey) Avery, Hammonds Plains NS.; son-in-law, Jerry (Ali) Kennie; sisters, Bernice (Jack) Evans, Esther Pellerin, Jean Joudrey, Margie (Ralph) Robertson, and brother Wilbert (Lyllie) Pellerin; grandchildren, Daniel, Kaleigh, Sarah, John Mark, Matthew, Jessica, Chad, Nicole, Ashley, Patrick, Kyle, Brandon, Emily, Megan and Christopher; great grandchildren, Ella, Sam, Lester and Sydney; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her dear daughter Blanche Kennie. Special thanks to a very sweet family friend Janet Durant for her kindness and dedication to Mom.
Her family would also like to thank the staff of Drummond Hall for their care and compassion over the past 3 weeks.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr, Halifax NS
Funeral mass will be at St. Mother Teresa of Kolkata, Wed, Dec 7, at 11am. Father Duncan MacMaster will be officiating immediately followed by reception. Burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Family flowers only.
