Leonora Daphne Meagher, 93, of Bedford passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital, QEII, Halifax on October, 16, 2019. She was born in Torquay, on the south coast of England on December 26, 1925 to the late Leonard Wannell and Hilda Frances (Poulton) Wannell, and spent her childhood there. She also met her future husband, Eric Meagher, in Torquay, as he was stationed there during World War II. Nora and Eric were married in England following the war and in 1946 she bravely crossed the Atlantic Ocean to begin her new life in Waverley, Nova Scotia as a war bride. They raised their family in Waverley where she and Eric remained until his retirement in 1980. In their retirement years they were happy to become ‘snowbirds’, dividing their time between Florida, USA and Aylesford in the Annapolis Valley where they made many friends in both communities. Following Eric’s passing in 1996, Nora resided in Bedford, where, for several years, she enjoyed frequent trips to the mall, and visiting with her many friends and neighbours and with her children and grandchildren in their homes and summer cottages.
Nora will be remembered for her love of family and wonderful sense of humour and fun. She loved to dance and was often the first one on the dance floor, even in her most senior years at her grandchildren’s weddings and most recently in May 2017 at her son’s birthday party. Nora was a kind and thoughtful person. She was extremely fond of her children and grandchildren and always proud of all their accomplishments.
Nora is survived by sons, John (Liz) Hammonds Plains, Ted, Beaver Bank; daughter, Suzzette Pryde (Ben) Sackville; daughter-in-law Carol Meagher, Bedford; grandchildren, Michael, Krista and Shawn Meagher, Adam Pryde and great-grandchildren, Sam and Simon Meagher, Nicholas Andrews and Ella and Ava Gillis. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Eric; son Tony; and granddaughters Kimberley Meagher and Tracey Meagher.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of Bayshore Home Health and the VON for their kind and dedicated care over the past several years. Also, special thanks to Kayla for her many acts of kindness. Thank you also to the staff of 4B VG hospital for the excellent care provided to Nora in recent months.
Cremation is entrusted to JA Snow Funeral Home, Halifax with burial and graveside service to be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In keeping with Nora’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A Mass will be said for Nora at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Chalice (www.Chalice.ca.) or a charity of your choice.
