Laura Alexandra Martin, 37, died suddenly September 19, 2017, at her home in Dartmouth. Born in Halifax August 5, 1980, Laura was the beloved daughter of Theresa (Martin) Babb, and adored stepdaughter of Franklin Babb.
Laura is survived by her brother Casey (Ashley) Babb, Ottawa. She was the much loved granddaughter of John “Bud” and Joan (MacDonald) Martin who predeceased her. Laura was predeceased by her brother Seth Patrick Martin in 1985.
Laura attended French Immersion at Saint Agnes School and the Sacred Heart School of Halifax. She completed high school at Dartmouth High, and was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Community College, Waterfront Campus, in 2014. In her youth, Laura studied piano and was a basketball enthusiast on and off the court.
To know Laura was to know love. She embraced the earth and all its creatures with compassion and joy. She was warm and kind to everyone she met, and she put people at ease with her wonderful sense of humour. Laura worked very hard to overcome some of the obstacles life can put in one’s way, and her successes were celebrated by all who loved her.
Laura was a gardener, a hiker, and a huge fan of autobiographies. She kept up with the Kardashians. She loved live music and traveled across the country to hear some of her favourite artists. Laura’s creative abilities with a paint brush, a pen, a pencil, or a crayon were enviable, and her homemade birthday cards are treasures to those who received them. More than anything, Laura was an interior designer who could turn banal into beautiful, her own homes always showcases of her enormous talent.
Laura will be missed by all who loved her, but no one more than me, her mother, whose life was forever changed for the better the day that Laura was born. She brought endless amounts of joy to my heart and I will keep her there with me forever.
There are times when darkness overshadows light, when we feel invisible and forgotten. It would seem that in her final days, Laura had lost the promise of hope. If you ever feel the light dimming, if you can no longer see tomorrow, please reach out to someone, anyone, and tell them you need help. Even a stranger. Just please tell someone so that your family will never know the pain of this soul crushing loss.
A celebration of Laura’s life will be held Sunday, September 24, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Please join us to share your stories or memories, or to simply give and receive a warm embrace. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully received by Phoenix Youth Programs, or Hope for Wildlife.
