Peacefully and quietly surrounded by her loving family, Laura (Barton) Daye passed away at age 90 on October 18th, 2021 in the Halifax Infirmary QE11. Born in Acaciaville Digby County, she was the youngest of 17 children to the late Deacon William Barton and Josephine (Harris) Barton. She was predeceased by her loving husband Delmore (Buddy) Daye, affectionately called ‘My Bud’; sisters Helen, Madeline, Dorothy, Audrey, Daisy, Mary, Hilda and Eva; brothers Addison, Sherman, Sandford, Gerrald, Wilbert, Bradford and Tommy. She is survived by her 9 children of whom she spoke of often: Melinda, Denise, Delmore (Buddy) Jr, Candace (Clayton), Gilbert (Lori), Mark (Ruth), Tina (Henry) Tracey, and Leslie; 25 Grandchildren, 25 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren; several nieces and nephews as well as special nieces Marguerite Gray and Gloria Hill; special nephews Brad Barton and Romeo Barton; special daughter Faye Trim; and God-daughter Jasmeen Jean-Noel.
Laura was a member of New Horizon Baptist Church (formally known as Cornwallis Street Baptist Church) for over 60 years. She served as a Deaconesses as well as on numerous committees and choirs such as: The Black Symposium Choir and Drama Group who sang before Queen Elizabeth, Missionary Society, Helping Hand Society, Church Clerk, Sunday School Superintendent and Senior Choir member for more than 50 years - The congregation has been favored by her soprano solos for many decades, African United Baptist Association Clerk and Women’s Institute. She was also an active member of community-based organizations such as: The Halifax Council of Women, Halifax Ladies Music Club and Past Noble Grand Master of the Wilberforce Lodge.
Mom was employed with the Halifax Regional School Board for 27 years. She was a teacher assistant in Special Education and Resource. Many youths within the community can attest to her dedication in helping children to read.
Following her retirement from the school system she continued her legacy of service as a volunteer at the Halifax Infirmary.
Mom was a sincere, hardworking Christian lady who loved the Lord, her church and her community. Many lives have been impacted by her wisdom, influence and prayer.
She was a loving care-giver, mother and wife. She was often the strong quiet force behind her husband Bud’s very public involvements.
She had a tremendous sense of humor, wit, ‘quick tongue,’ style and class. She loved to travel and WALK or Run the commons every day at 6:00am well into her senior years.
Mom, Nanny, Granny, Aunt Laura or Laura will be missed by the many lives she touched.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Northwood 1C and in particular Lisa Colley and Claudette Provo for the loving care they provided, to our church and community for all of your prayer and comfort during this difficult time.
Visitation will be held on October 22nd, 2021 between 6 and 9 pm at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street (Halifax, NS)
Funeral service will be held on October 23rd in Faith Tabernacle Church (Faith City Church), 6225 Summit Street (Halifax, NS) at 1 pm.
Burial will be held at St. Johns Cemetery following the funeral service.
*Proof of vaccination is required for the visitation, funeral service, and repast.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to New Horizons Baptist Church Building Fund or the Delmore Buddy Daye Scholarship.
