PERRY, Karl Woodman, 87, of Halifax Nova Scotia passed away peacefully on January 27, 2016 at the Halifax Infirmary Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, New York, March 23, 1928, Karl was the son of the late Myron and Ora (Woodman) Perry.
A proud and caring grandfather, Papa, he will be sadly missed by his cherished granddaughters Ashlee and Amanda. A graduate of Acadia University with a Bachelor of Education and Saint Mary’s University with a Masters of Education he began his teaching career in Berwick, Nova Scotia. Karl then went on to hold numerous other administrative educational positions within the province with increased responsibility including Superintendent of Halifax County Schools, retiring as the Director of Halifax City Schools. Over the years he mentored countless students and teachers and was instrumental in their future success and achievements.
He was a member of the Probus Club, Rotary Bridge Club, and a past member of the Oakfield Golf and Country Club and the Armdale Kiwanis Club. He was a life- long member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church where he served as Warden, church school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and chairperson of the annual summer fair.
His interests included playing bridge, going to the theatre and the symphony, singing in a choir and volunteering in the cardiac ward at Capital Health. Karl and his wife Parnell spent many years travelling throughout the world and especially enjoyed the many years they spent together with their friends at their summer cottage in Chester, Nova Scotia. While in Chester, Karl and Parnell spent many happy days, enjoying nature, picking wild flowers and berries, going for picnics along the shore and anything to do with the outdoors.
Predeceased by his wife of fifty-eight years, Parnell, brother-in-law, Bill Davenport and sister-in-law, Pearl Perry. Survived by son, Tim (Brenda) Dartmouth, granddaughters, Ashlee (Ottawa) and Amanda (Halifax). He is also survived by his sister, Maryon Davenport (New Mexico), his twin brother, George and wife Gladys (Baltimore), his younger brother, Stuart (Dartmouth) and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the physicians and nursing staff of unit 7.3 of the Halifax Infirmary and his family physician, Dr. Margaret Leighton. A special thank you is extended to his personal care giver for over five years, Eileen Hackett of Halifax, Nova Scotia. We also wish to sincerely thank Regina and Joanne of Home n Stead, his two caregivers during his illness while in hospital.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. No visitation by request. A memorial service in celebration of Karl’s life will be held on Friday, February 05, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Anglican Church on the Grand Parade in Halifax, Rev. Dr. Paul Friesen officiating followed by interment in Fairview Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul’s Church Memorial Fund, the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or the QEII Foundation.
