She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly (Brendan O’Neill) and Theresa Hoffman; son, Todd Hoffman; granddaughters, Katlyn Hoffman (Matt Jakeman), Lily O’Neill and Charlotte Giroux; sisters Elaine Keller (Mike Amiro) and Marlene Salmonson; and brother, Harold Keller.
Karen had a varied business career, and although she retired a number of times, it was never for a long time. Her employers included the Department of National Defense (Ship Repair Unit), IWK Health Centre and Halifax Regional Police Department.
Karen was a consummate volunteer, which included events such as The Credit Union Atlantic Lung Run, Doors Open Halifax, IFDS Worlds 2014 (World Sailing Championship for People with Disabilities), Cheer Expo Halifax, Subaru Epic Dartmouth Triathlon, Mi’kmaw Venture Project and Halifax Board of CRIME STOPPERS. When Karen’s cancer was diagnosed, she was registering as a volunteer for the 2020 North American Indigenous Games to be held in Halifax.
Karen was an extremely nice person, who loved meeting people no matter who they were and showed a genuine interest in learning about their lives. She cherished especially the large family gatherings in Sheet Harbor, Annapolis Valley and Halifax. She enjoyed frequent trips over the years with her brother Harold (Toronto) and sister Elaine (Halifax) to visit their sister Marlene and family in Edmonton.
